Large Mexican Palm Leaf Cowboy Hat with Chin Strap, Sombreros de Hombre de Palma Natural

I needed good sun protection for a Grand Canyon river trip this past August. The MWS Palm Leaf Cowboy Hat looked like a contender and was priced so that I wouldn't be too bummed if it didn't survive the trip. It stood up to 10 days of constant wear, getting completely soaked whilst clipped to a carabiner when rowing the big rapids. A friend on the trip had a palm leaf Stetson that lost it's shape completely, but my MWS still looks great!It's thick, so it was warm on the hottest days. I knew it only had a couple of small vent holes on each side, so this wasn't too surprising. The sizing was perfect for my 7 3/8 hat-sized head. The hat band fell off on Day 2, but I didn't much care. Functionally, it was a solid value and a good looking hat.

Love the natural fiber and handsome design. Great for the sun.

Love the wide brim for sun protection. Strangely, on the first day I wore it the first two strangers I met on a walking path complimented me on my hat. Strange because I'm really old, not a young stud. I knocked off a star because the brim is pretty floppy and I didn't like the white stripe in the front, but a black felt pen solved that. I can live with the silver bangles.

Update: Ok, this thing definitely has a grassy type smell to it, but I'm kind of getting used to it. I definitely wouldn't want to wear it indoors, the smell would drive me nuts. Note, little known fact: The two air holes on the brim of the hat make your shadow look like some kind of alien (See photo, might be difficult to see the eyes but they're there!). Kids love it and will try to stomp on your shadow!It's always a gamble buying anything off of Amazon that you're going to wear, but I got lucky, this thing fits me PERFECTLY! I measured my head with a standard tape measure, the metal kind. I simply wrapped it around my head and it came to about 22.5 inches. The listing said that this hat fits up to 23.5 in, so I thought I'd be in good shape, and I was! It's super comfortable and the inner band tests on my head very nicely. I'm impressed with the quality of this hat, thank you Amazon and more importantly, the craftsmen who made this!(One thing I want to add, the material they use for the hat definitely has a scent to it. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's noticeable at least for me since I have a very sensitive nose.)

Sent back some other hats; but not this one! Husband head measured 23" but this hat was a little too BIG. I got in touch with the seller & was told to put some "weatherstripping into the inside hat band." I had half inch thick stripping so I cut it in half (thickness) and put a 2" piece on all 4 sides; the stripping is already glued on one side; & now the hat fits like a glove. Now, I am going to put a few hand stitches into the band and weatherstripping just for extra protection so the weatherstripping doesn't move or come off. What a great company! My husband loves the cowboy look and shape of this hat. He is 84 years old & can't wait to get on the tractor and cut grass.

I've had 2 of these and found them more durable than other makes. I wear this hat every day, heat or cold, sun or rain. In my 60 years I've owned and destroyed allot of hats. This waxed palm hat holds up for about 2 years of my abuse, hence owning 2 of them so far. Pryor to this hat a hat would only last me about 6 months. There will be a third in my future but thought while I was pricing it I would write up this review.The hat band is trash, so do your self a favor and buy some 1 inch leather and some leather strip, throw the hat band in the trash where it belongs and make yourself one that actually works.

Loved the hat when it can it so much I bought another one. Great for shading but only problem was: is says one size however, the first hat was a perfect fit and the second hat was way to big otherwise I would have given them a 5 star rating.....

Bought this hat because my last one just fell apart from sun and wind. Sewn palm leaf is much more durable than straw. The New Mexico sunlight is very strong as we are a mile high and the UV index can get around 12-13 during the summer. Wind gusts of 75 are not uncommon so a good means for keeping the hat in place is a must. Took that picture during the last annular eclipse. Have had skin cancer so don't need any more carving off of my sorry hide so I need a good hat and I am happy with this one.
