Best budget TX available, by far!!
This is an amazingly capable and well-designed transmitter for such a price! You can get it cheaper elsewhere (and probably have to wait for restocking), but I prefer paying a slight premium for fast Prime shipping and the comfort of having stellar Amazon customer service for immediate support if there are any problems (good luck with that on the usual discount sites). Fortunately, the radio is working well, and I'm super happy with it so far! That said, other sites do sell it in other colors besides white, but it's probably just a matter of time until those show up on amazon, too.I only use it for mini/micro quads now, but I can see how I can grow into more complex setups with other aircraft as I branch out. The richness of the OpenTX mixer abstraction, the extensibility of using external modules, and the abundance of programmable switches mean I won't need a fancier TX anytime soon. The rubber grips on the bottom are comfortable in the hand, and the scroll wheel and redesigned page/menu/exit button cluster is much nicer than the pure button-based approach of its predecessor, the X9D. I don't care if the screen is slightly smaller and lower-resolution; I can see what I need to on this one, and with the goggles on, I'm listening more than looking, anyway.OpenTX can be a bit trickier to setup than a simpler TX at first, if you're not familiar with it already. There are many beginner videos on youtube that can get you quickly in the air for a specific aircraft, but I found most of them were pretty light on detail as far as really grokking the OpenTX programming model. Also - sadly - many of them are giving bad advice for getting a proper setup.A standout exception is the Painless360 youtube channel, which took me way too long to stumble across. He has an ever-growing playlist on the Taranis Q X7 transmitter specifically, as well as tons of other videos on the X9D and OpenTX more generally. I'm not sure why his avatar is a blue and red pill for an RC channel, but his info is solid, and I'm still working through his more advanced material. Thanks, Painless360, if you're reading this! :-)

Excellent radio and technology
After crashing a beautiful B-17 with my old FlySky radio system, I had a discussion at the field with another gentleman who was using FrSky for his planes. I promptly did some research and purchased this radio, along with the battery, charger and an X8R receiver for my old Cessna 182 model. After a lot of setup (it's not easy the first time) I took my plane out and although was concerned as the throws looked different... there was nothing to worry about. The plane flies smoother than ever before and I'm not having issues with the receiver being blown away by stray signals in our area anymore. I have the RSSI reading on the transmitter now which is *awesome* and downloading the files from FrSky onto an SD card, putting it in the radio, you get a lot more functionality and voice prompts. This radio and transmission technology is the way to go if you are having signal issues. Even with Spektrum, there have been several crashes at our flying site. There's a lot of great how-to videos online, from Painless360 and RCDiy to name a couple. There's a lot to set up on these radios but it's totally worth it.

Best bang for your buck!
This is the first radio I tried to understand radio programming. So now for me it is super easy and I can do just about anything I want with the incredibly powerful OpenTX software that it comes with. Being able to have 16 channels for less than most 8 channels is huge. Talking to others who have other brands they don’t find the programming so easy. Just like I don’t find Spektrum programming easy or intuitive. It’s a matter of two different languages really they are both similar in what you can do they just go about it differently. This is my go to radio for nearly all my needs. I have at least 10 of them I’ve lost count. I make my own compact 16 channel receivers from 2 parts I buy at a cost of $25 each you really can’t beat that. Definitely worth it to at least give one a try there are many videos online to help you with the software.

Great deal
This radio has it all for a low price, if you're thinking about buying it just do it. Keep in mind this DOES NOT come with a battery holder for AA batteries, so you can't even test it out of the box without buying a battery pack. I recommend the "Turnigy nano-tech 2100mAh LiFePo4 Transmitter Pack" as it fits perfectly and will be more reliable than a lipo. A voltage range of 5.6-6.8v with a warning at 6v in opentx are the ideal settings with this pack

WARNING - WILL NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT BATTERY PACK AND BATTERY PACK CHARGER
Updated Review. Please note - the radio will not turn on out of the box without at least these two things (additional $45.95). This means you will not be able to configure any of the radio settings or fly simulator until the battery arrives, and is charged and installed (battery was charged fully when it came, which is nice, but will not charge through the mini USB port so you will need the separate charger eventually).Switches and gimbals feel nice, and gimbals are adjustable. However, when I loosened the gimbal springs to my liking, the sticks no longer center at exactly zero and instead land a tad off in one direction or another. Screw wells are deep and narrow so you need a screwdriver with a neck no wider than the head to get inside. Interchangeable bit screwdrivers will not work. Screws strip very easily so be careful.Otherwise the radio functions well, transmitter has decent power and OpenTX was flashed properly. Antenna is not replaceable, a little disappointing for me.Final note: This radio is available on sites other than Amazon for a much better price. It's worth waiting a few extra days for shipping when you can put the savings into the necessary battery pack and charger and still come out saving money.
