A beginner's gimbal
This is my first gimbal, well over a year of use from April 2018.What I've put on it? Samsung Galaxy J3(2017), and(2018) smartphones both dont have video image stabilization, they are budget phones.Andoer An300, and Thieye t5e action cameras with a unbranded action camera adapter.Canon Powershot N (2013) point & shoot camera, you can put point & shoots too as long as the top, bottom, and rear are really flat.As this is my first foray into gimbals I can only compare it to my past monopod setups. Basically the atypical selfie stick, or Pedco Ultrapod II with a few Pedco Ultramount360's linked together. It does beat using those past setups my video recordings has gotten smoother compared to the obvious jitter of the past. For the longest time I've only used Smooth-Q on follow mode which is its default mode. Major major gripe for this one a this point is changing to its other modes. Pressing the mode button in series is getting on my nerves. I got it right a few times, but seldom rare when I need or want to so I stopped doing that and kept it on follow which of course isn't bad anyways.Using it with the ZYPlay app. Given my smartphones have lesser internal storage compared to external on the card, the videos from the app are save to internal. I know my phones can adapt the external MicroSD's to default storage. Dont want to. I remove the card and use it in other devices too. Not a good app for me in that regard. Use the calibrate feature it sort of works. Found out the predecessor app Zhiyun Assistant via my second gimbal gotten months later, Zhiyun Rider-M(only for gopro style action cameras) unbelievably more useful to me than the ZYPlay. Primarily for external remote function. Never got ZYPlay to work for remote as far as the latest updates as of April 2019. Zhiyun Assistant it's great. Filming with my smartphone controlling the gimbal with my other smartphone via Zhiyun Assistant which in turn getting physical controls from the Ipega-9087 with Octopus app. That's 4 devices complementing each other.Usage time different from battery life...I've gotten 2 hours of use till the axis motors overheated, and shutoff. Still have to turn the gimbal off. Gave it a 30 minute cooling period till I can use it again. The motors will overheat on some occasions depending on environment.Battery life, I guess it gave about 6 hours till empty. I personally dislike non-removable built-in batteries, I've given it a pass as it's a first. I'd like to try the removable battery versions eventually.Build quality... cheap plastic, how am able to actually give this a go it's cheap compared to its I guess carbon fiber? models. It's not water resistant either, I see exposed electronics where the handle meets the bottom motor. Never used it during rainy days as a result. Dont want any water to seep in there. The Rider-M on the other hand is close to water resistant. To finalize... the Smooth-Q is a great beginners gimbal, affordable, it's getting cheaper as an older model. Battery life may hinder over time(non removeable) The latter Smooth models I assume have rectified some issues? I dunno never used them. Definitely recommend it over the 1 or 2 Axis gimbals that are near this gimbals pricerange.

Though it was going to be an amazing product but I was wrong.
Good day to everyone hereThis is honest review and my time with the Zhiyun Smooth Q Gimbal and I made four videos on my Youtube Channel (ThePandaPhotographer) and currently making one last video about a serious headache about the warranty and return. First and foremost I would like to say that when I plan to purchase this product for my travel vlogging and video content, I was hoping for a good experience but it was half and a half until the device started after the 10th day to shut down on full batteries. For the price, the gimbal is a no-brainer and consumer friendly device for a smartphone user to have when making travel video or Youtube content creators. Now The Zhiyun Play app really kills the life out of your batteries when using the APP so you have been fairly warned. At the time the follow or Face detect feature doesn't work and at the time it does work but it not a smooth experience as other gimbals offer a better experience.Build quality of a plastic build is good but do not take this outside in extreme weather condition. It's plastic and doesn't say it weather sealed product either so please do try it. Programming the gimbal is easy for some but made be difficult for others to learnKeep in mind when using Anti-shake, it will crop the image slightly to make sure smooth footage but in my experience using it, it was half and a half and if you are using OIS in your iPhone, it's best to turn off OIS due to the fighting between the gimbal and the smartphone. After two days of having the product, this is where thing took a turn from weird to bad.1) While testing on a running scene (within 20 minutes) the gimbal die and it was fully charged.2) Gimbal will not response to modes selected when selected3) You can't charge the phone in landscape mode (or less you purchase an L-type cable (Make sure it a certified cable for your smartphone)4) While using in landscape mode and charging the phone the gimbal battery life can drain much faster while using the Zhiyun Play APPNOTE: using other Apps like Promovie did not have the same effects as the Zhiyun Play App.5) If you will like to add third-party lenses to smartphone while using the Gimbal, you will have to purchase or make counter-weights if lenses weight more than 30G and max load for this smooth Q is 220g6) After the 10th day using it the battery is no longer functions normally7) Call Amazon to report and get a fast replacement and was told bad news that they can't replace it but refund me and I can purchase the item again. (Note: if you purchase this in North American you can only send it back to North America and you will pay for international shipping) You can't take it to another country or another warranty service centre either. There are many videos online and there are just too many videos of people purchasing and the item starts to be defective from the start. This causes concern for me as a Semi-pro photographer travelling and need reliable gear. I've sent Zhiyun direct video links and clips of my issue on Facebook and other contact platforms. What bugs me that I can't use an Amazon label to shipped to the US warehouse direct and if I send it back to seller, Amazon will provide a shipping label but it's up to the seller to inform Amazon I made a return and I had to deal with this problem in the past and the latest my refund can be issue is either after the 12 days to 14 days. This is why I have to be more carefully purchasing items from third-party sellers on Amazon. Overall my experience has been good and bad but the final days in the last days using the product will be the glue to my memories for a long time.Update: The Gimbal started to behave more strangely than before and now doesn't even wake up or less I'd plug it to the wall to power/ charge the device. Strange right? But further testedThis is a real world review on the Zhiyun Smooth Q and I am sorry to report that I will be using this no longer due to some battery issue with the unit. It shut itself off with using the iPhone and gimbal at the same time while charging and using the Zhiyun Play App. Also at the handle, I do feel the battery getting hot after 2 minutes of using it which causes the smooth Q to crash and turn off. I send it out to be tested and turns out there is no 26650 battery but a 18650 battery inside. I've published good video about the product after my first week but it's now 3 weeks and 10 days out of those 3 weeks have been a headache for me. Save your money and just purchase a better Zhiyun gimbal for your smartphone because this smooth Q is two-faced girlfriend that i will never want to date again. ThePandaphotographer at Youtube.

A brilliant bit of kit for a very fair price.
I have only just purchased the Smooth-Q after doing a lot of research on the subject of gimbals and I have to say I feel I made the right choice. The Smooth-Q comes neatly packaged inside a protective carry case and there is a USB cable supplied for charging and connecting to a computer for firmware updates and tweaking.I have an iPhone 7 plus and read a few reviews saying it struggled with stabilisation or that the weight was an issue but I have not found any problems with it so far. However, you will have to take the phone out of any chunky cases to get it to balance. The operation of the gimbal could not be simpler, and the joystick is a breeze to use. I have tried it with the stock iPhone camera app, Filmic Pro and ZY Play from Zhiyun themselves. They all work great and I especially like that the ZY Play app has the moving time lapse option, where you can set multiple points for the camera to point at as it progresses through the time lapse. The modes are easy to change between and I am excited to find opportunities to film some great shots using this great tool. I would love to go back in time with it to when I filmed a lot of skateboarding videos as it would have made for some awesome footage. I have used it with my phone in portrait mode to film instagram stories and my friends have been very impressed with the footage. The build quality is great and feels professional in the hand. The grip is comfortable and the unit isn't too heavy to hold for long periods of time. The battery life is great, I have used it a fair bit and haven't needed to charge it at all yet. The USB slot at the bottom of the handle is handy if your phone is running low on battery and you don't have any other way of charging it up.All in all so far I am very impressed and for the price you can't go wrong.A great bit of kit to help get much better footage straightaway. Thanks for reading.James

Love it
I bought this because I wanted something to help my videos appear more professional looking and stable. I have the iPhone 8 Plus which is really good at stability anyway, but this gimbal takes that to a whole new level.Setup is so straightforward - balance the phone in the clip and then turn it on. That's it. Depending on the size and weight of your phone, you may need to use the adjustable nut to extend the arm of the gimbal. I need to do this for my 8 Plus as it is quite a weighty phone. Once done it never needs to be done again. The clip for the phone is very strong so I have no concerns about it falling out, but it can be fiddly putting it in and removing it.The buttons on the gimbal are straightforward - Power/Record button, Mode button, and a joystick for moving the camera. Depending on which mode you're currently in the joystick may not work how you want it to do so. It can take a bit of practice and messing about to learn it, and I'm still learning all the time despite having it for several weeks now. There are 3 modes - Follow, Lock, and Full. It's hard to describe what each one does, but the manual explains it all better than I could. I tend to find I use Full mode the most - this allows me to move the phone as I move the gimbal in any direction. To change modes, you need to press the Mode button. It's quite a strange setup, but I think this is how it works... When turned on, the gimbal is set to Follow. Press Mode once to set to Lock. Press twice to set to full. Press once to set back to Follow. (I'm a bit confused about what Follow, Lock and Full really is so if I'm wrong about that then I apologise!)There is an app you can download to use with the gimbal, but I find it quite annoying. First of all, it's hit and miss about whether your recordings will be right. I've had several that just freeze and are then out of sync. The track feature is great, when it works. It can very often lose its target, meaning it becomes useless. I think this is more of a gimmick at this stage rather than a proper solution.I've scored it 4 out of 5 because of the little issues, but don't let that put you off - this gimbal is well worth the money and I'm so happy I bought it.

Not great with the iPhone 8 Plus because its too heavy, and the specs listed are misleading.
First off, this is a 5/5 device when used with smaller or lighter phones than my 8 plus. My 6S works perfectly with it and its a real boon for stable videos. I can even use it while still in its case. It does get confused sometimes but its never going to be perfect at this price. It’s good enough for causal film making, and a real boon for shooting over the heads of people at parades etc.My issue is with the misleading specs. This is advertised as working with phones up to 220g. My 8 plus is 202g I believe, so there is also leeway to add a lens. The thing is, the actual specs say up to 200g, and this is born out buy the fact that the gimbal cant be set up to have the phone balanced as it should be. It’s too heavy, even without a lens on it.Saying that, it does work ok, but as per the warnings in the manual, the motors are working harder and the effect is more limited compared to a phone that comes in under 200g.

Very good stabilizer, the app is not good.
Very good stabilizer, the Android app needs some work. I use it with a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone and it provides wonderfully stabilized videos (especially with the the phone's photo app, in 60 fps), it also allows to use an adapted external clip zoom (nearly impossible barehanded due to the natural vibration of the hands), its very important to balance it properly(especially with the zoom). The clamping is very good, it holds surely my phone, even if it's within a case (although is better not to).My next step will be some kind of windscreen for the phone. Really is a pity that the app has some major glitches.Pros: Stabilizer is awesome, it works absolutely fine, even in hard situations. The battery lasts a lot, and it is very well constructed.Cons: Android App has some glitches, for exaple, motion timelapse shows a "Position too close" error and the exploring of the 9-photos panorama only gives me one band of 3 photos. It dont allow me to take 60fps movies.

Amazing for the price!
Love this gimbal! I took ages to decide between this and the Osmo, but took a punt on this as it was cheaper and had a couple features the Osmo didn’t, like full 360 rotation. Battery life is incredible! Use it pretty much everywhere I go now with my iPhone 7+, which it balances perfectly providing you extend the arm as instructed. The app is great, it’s probably come on a long way since some of the reviews were written - I’ve not had a problem with it and have seen improvements since I first bought too. For the price you can’t beat it. My only gripe is the zoom slider, but that’s software rather than hardware. The slider doubles as a toggle to switch camera or camera modes, which is sometimes annoying when trying to zoom and you end up switching. It also uses a digital only zoom and does not make use of the phones optical zoom. Other than that I love it!
