Soul Comes Home: A Celebration of Stax Records and Memphis Soul Music

Tap your feet, cut a rug ENJOY
Soul Comes Home is one of the most enjoyable concert films I’ve had the pleasure to watch. Originally released in 2003 a lot of the Stax artists were still alive to participate in this all-star salute to the label. What a gem it is, too. Tap your feet, sing along & enjoy the funky music that was Stax Records. You’ll recognize all the grooves & see the artists who made the 60s & 70s America’s funkiest decades. “Ride Sally Ride”.

Pretty Decent
This DVD has about 18 songs from the Stax record label with live performances. The copyright on the disk indicated 2005 which is when I assumed the concert took place. The DVD holds about 112 minutes worth of content.I had heard of Stax in more recent years but I couldn't have told you which artists were on their labels or any songs that had come from there. The performances were energetic, especially considering the ages of the performers and still entertaining. Some of the performers, and songs were as follows:Green OnionsShaftMustang SallySoul Finger*Marla Staples*Al Green*Solomon BurkePercy Sledge*Michael McDonaldUnfortunately, I cannot remember the names of all the artists let alone the song titles. However, i did note the artists which performed more than one song (*). All in all I do recommend this DVD.

Great Music, BUT
This could and should have been easily a 5 star review. The music is just plain wonderful, and the performers, for the most part (there are a couple of minor exceptions) sound nearly as good as they did 30 years ago. A lot of vibrancy, and the band(s) were uniformly tight and enthusiastic. A wonderful musical experience.HOWEVER, my copy of the DVD (which they may have fixed by now), had a VERY annoying mismatch between the sound and the visuals. That is, the performers lip and mouth movements were never in sync with what you were hearing - always a delay or lag. I mean, c'mon people... I thought that this sort of thing went out with 1950's public service cafeteria school films. In this digital day and age, there is simply NO EXCUSE for this. It's pure laziness or sloppiness for something that should have been easily fixed prior to letting the DVD go out. I'm sorry, but I have to take points off for this, as it detracts from the viewing experience. That said, again, the music is wonderful. After having evacuated New Orleans for Katrina, I am now living in Memphis, and happy to be in what I view as the 2nd most important American city for music. This DVD gives a good argument for that. By the way, the DVD puts in a plug for the STAX records museum here (the DVD is actually a tribute to STAX, filmed at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis). The museum is worth seeing, and contains 2 items that thrilled me: the actual Hammond Organ that Booker T used to record "Green Onions", and the actual Wah-Wah pedal used on the intro to Isaac Haye's "Shaft". These are like holy relics to me, and there are many more. Memphis also has several other music related museums, etc.If you don't mind the performer's mouths not matching the sound, you'll love this Dvd!

A Great Soul DVD
For all who enjoy soul music, this DVD is a true find. His Highness Solomon Burke is the only man alive that would attempt the Otis Redding classic, "Try a Little Tenderness". Solomon's rousing performancse should remind all that this soul legend is still performing and puts on one of the greatest live shows of all time. Saw him once in '07 and '08. Not to be missed. Al Green shows why his live performances are fan favorites. The late Isaac Hayes leading the band in the "Theme from Shaft" makes it clear that he was a great talent. A terrific bonus on the DVD is the amazing performanance of gospel legend, and Stax artist, Rance Allen. His version of Reverend James Cleveland's "That Will be Good Enough For Me" is inspiring. It should be mentioned that I purchased my copy in December 2008 and there was NO A/V SYNCH ISSUE. It appears that this problem has been resolved. This is an essential piece of music to own.

What a great compilation of music performed by the original artists
What a great compilation of music performed by the original artists. The DVD is high quality and well worth viewing. We had folks over for cocktails and I put in this DVD. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and could not take their eyes off of it. They sung along with it and even danced. They wanted to know where I got this great performance of music. Looks like it will be a great stocking stuffer for Christmas! This DVD is a must buy!!!!

(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bayで参加。おまけのインタビューでは、Eivis CosteroやU2のBONOの姿も。大満足の1枚でした。全112分。字幕無し。ただし、リージョン1ですので、ご注意を。
