Poignant story of survival
Poignant story of a half Asian girl who experiences prejudice in a small town in 1880 US. The author clearly shows all the nasty ways that people show bigotry and hatred, from pulling their children out of the school the girl attends to outright physical abuse. The girl wants to be a dressmaker in her father’s shop, so there is a lot of description of fabric and sewing techniques, which I’m not sure boys will appreciate.

Good book for a good price.
Needed this book for school so I ordered it. It was a good price for a paperback book. It did not come damaged.

A Must Read Gem
I read this with my 10 year old girl. We LOVE historical fiction. We enjoy how these types of stories help us step back into time and better understand the lives of those who have gone before us. Linda Sue Park is a new author for us, but we will definitely be looking into her other works. This particular story captivates readers with the life of Hanna, a young teen, who relocates to a newly settled town in the heartland of America with her father. This is not another Laura Ingalls Wilder story though; Hanna faces many trials just because she doesn't look like everyone else. You'll fall in love with this girl and her journey. You'll laugh with her. Cry with her. Hope with her. I could't recommend this book more or love the sentiment behind it more. I think everyone can learn something from Hanna and her story.

Little House on the Prairie for the rest of the world.
Oh my gosh. Linda Sue Park has written the version of Little House on the Prairie for everyone else, the ones who aren't white, and cute, and fit into what most people think of living on the prairie in the late 1800s. Park even says that was her intent.Well researched, well written book about a girl who is half-Chinese who travels with her widowed father to an area very much like De Smit of the Laura Ingles Wilder fame. There she encounters all the prejudice that is all too prevalent at that time.Read this in one day, I could not put it down. Through it all Hanna keeps her composure, remembers what her mother always taught her, and moves on.Highly, highly recommend this book.

Thank you!
This was a beautiful book. I fall into the category of girls who grew up in the 80s loving all things Laura, but as an adult feel uncomfortable with many aspects of the Little House series. Linda Sue Park has given Laura fans like myself such a gift in writing a book to give a honest portrayal of what the prairie would have felt like in the eyes of a girl who was not white. I can’t wait to read it again, this time with my kids, and discuss the story.

Slightly damaged
I ordered four of these books for a book club at school and one was damaged slightly. No time to send it back and it is still readable so I am keeping it.

So good!
I really enjoyed this book! I love the new eyes to see prairie life through and the chance to think about what living in that time was like for people who were not of European descent. So glad I came across it
