OvenChek cooking surface thermometer
I was a bit disappointed that this is NOT an oven thermometer as it suggests. It is a great grill thermometer, but does not work in the oven.

A much needed accessory
When I received my new KitchenAid Grill this year, I realized that it did not have a thermometer built into the cover. This grill surface thermometer helps to overcome this limitation. The grill cranks out 67,000 BTUs and this thermometer can "almost" handle it. It reports up to 700 degrees, and I easily exceed its reporting range. It still works, even after these extreme temperatures. However, the red dye that is on its face is now a brown color, perhaps it was can designed for this type of heat.I leave it on the grill all the time. Its face is splashed with the juices from the steaks, and it is still working. It also has condensation inside the face after a cold day, but it still is working.I need to point out that I used it less than a dozen times over the last 1 month. This is a short-term review.**************************************************June 2006 Update -The thermometer has lost its color from the heat of the grill. It is filled with condensation. The face is so discolored that it can not be read. I am disappointed that it only lasted about 5 months, and now it goes in the trash.

Very poor, real waste of money
Great idea. I was excited to get this thermometer. I put it in an empty frying pan with the gas on high. After four minutes, the Teflon started gassing, indicating it was over 550F, but the thermometer only said 160F. Tested it in boiling water by putting the bottom only in the water, reading was accurate. then put it on the sink. After five minutes, the reading had dropped from 208F (our elevation is 3200 feet) to 150F. The problem is that this thing takes forever to change its reading. It is the slowest thermometer that I have ever seen. If I had waited for this thing to register 400F, my $40 pan would likely have melted. Great idea, useless product. Save your money.

Glass Discolors Making Thermometer Unreadable
I had high hopes for this product. A reading of the temperature of your grill makes so much more sense than getting one from up in the hood of the grill.Unfortunately, my excitement soon turned to disappointment after using my OvenCheck thermometer a few times. The glass cover of the thermometer started discoloring with the first use. I expected this since it is subjected to high temperatures, grease, and smoke. I assumed a little scouring powder and elbow grease would get it back to being good as new. And it worked well a number of times for burgers, veggies, brats, etc. Then I used it while smoking a Boston butt pork roast. 225 degrees for 5 hours. Wood chips. You get the picture. The glass soon became a dark brown color and the temperature became unreadable. Repeated scrubbing in the sink with Bar Keeper's Friend barely helped. While the thermometer seems to register an accurate temperature, it is basically useless because I can't see the temperature through the glass.Needless to say I will keep looking for another thermometer that meets my modest grilling needs.

Doe what it is ment to.
this is a decent tool, but it is very slow to respond to temperature.it takes several minutes to read 350 on my flat griddle and even longer to read 475 on my char broiler. so as long as you don't need it to read and update quickly or responsively, it will do the job.

Take the guesswork out of grilling
If you own a cheap grill as I do, knowing the temperature while cooking is always a mystery. This thermometer takes the guesswork out of grilling, allowing me to slow roast dry-rub chicken, pork and fish, and ribs. Although I didn't think it would work as well for steaks and burgers, it did show me that my grill temperature can reach 600+ degrees on high burner settings. So by turning the burners down a little, I have had less tendency to overcook. It does accumulate spatter during cooking as others have noted. By pushing it to the corner of the grill, I have minimized this. When it did need cleaning, I used a dab of olive oil on a dishcloth and it came off easily (just be sure to wipe any oil residue off before putting it back on the grill). It's a great bargain for what it does. The only way it could be better is if it could be read outside the grill with the lid down.

Small but mighty (& easy to clean.)
This little guy does exactly what he should do (accurately, I think.) I bought one of these after noticing that more and more receipes I encountered suggested a specific temperature for the skillet being used. Swedish pancakes required the hottest temperature; some meat dishes, of course were somewhat lower. Using one of these devices has another advantage: you can see what happens to the skillet as you turn up or turn down the flame level. (It's surprising for example how soon the temp. drops once you turn down the flame.) So this becomes another item that makes you a better cook--something I'm always looking for. Lance B.
