Good read
Definitely a unique storyline. A who-done-it that's sometimes funny, sometimes tense, a bit of heart felt and always surprising. You'll never guess how it ends.

I'm so sorry
I never write negative reviews, and I'm only doing so now so I can explain WHY I gave this 2 stars.I actually started reading book #2 after this one and just couldn't continue on.Margie has no backbone and it just absolutely drove me crazy.I went on to read the 2nd book in the series because I thought Margie would have an epiphany and stand her ground with her daughter and her mother. When I was halfway through the 2nd book I realized it wasn't going to happen and it was just infuriating to me as a reader. It's unfortunate, because I really liked the characters, but just couldn't STAND Margie's lack of backbone.

Oh, my goodness! My four sisters and I recommend books to each other, and I was trying to figure out to describe this one without giving away any plot lines. The closest I could get was 'sort of a Lucy and Ethel
getting into trouble' type of story. Just finished the first one and the next two are already in my Kindle! Keep writing and I will keep reading!

LOLF!!!!
There are just two kinds of books that cause my husband's head to swivel from his sudoku game (or from whatever he's busy with on his tablet) - books that make me cry (make that sob) and books that make me laugh. This is one of the most laugh out loud funny books I've read so far. Imagine a housewife, with two young kids and a busy husband, used to the day in and day out sameness of suburban life; getting a part time job as a private investigator; being naive and all, but somehow winging it on her first assignment (pardon me...I have to stop for a while as I am laughing while I recall the saran wrap and the McDonald's fry phone)....anyway, so it gets a little bit more complicated from that first assignment, with her pouncing on since she already has personal interests in the case...and the laugh goes on.There was a good mix of characters, and they were excellently built - it was practically like watching a movie, as I was able to vividly picture the costumes, their facial reactions, even their aura (gray or yellow?)!Even before I've finished the book, I was already prowling online for the second installment, but there's none yet; so I am eagerly waiting.

Certainly Not A Cozy
I love mysteries. But they have to be cozies. Because real life is tough enough - I enjoy reading about inn keepers and librarians and professors who stumble across a body and immediately start looking for clues and inevitably solve the crime. But a housewife who looks for a way to help with household finances but doesn't want to sell Tupperware or Mary Kay decides becoming a private detective is a good career decision.I can't say I laughed out but Margie Peterson is such a likeable character and her escapades so crazy wild I had to keep read to see what would happen next. Though I didn't laugh at her adventures, I did feel teary when she realizes her husband's betrayals.Adultery, sleazy motels, illegal immigrants, slave labor, transvestites -- not cozy subjects. Friendships, loyalty, adventures, the bad guys getting caught, that's what I enjoyed from this new book. I'm ordering the next two in this series right away because I've got to find out what happens next to Margie, Becky and Peaches.

Are they painful to read
I'm looking at some of the reviews and wondering what book they read. Laugh out loud? No. Does Margie put herself in absurd situations? Definitely. Are they painful to read, making you cringe at her antics? Absolutely. Does she show poor judgment? Most certainly. So she spends all day doing stupid things that are bound to blow up in her face, slides into the school parking lot on two wheels trying to get there on time to pick up her child (she's late--again), and then has to go home to a hypercritical husband--when he's there. Sure, that is funny to me. (NOT)The book covers a tumultuous few weeks of Margie's life that have life-changing ramifications. She does learn who her real friends are--there aren't many, apparently-- and that appearances are not everything. She's a mess and her life is probably about to get messier. There wasn't anything in the story that made me want to continue traveling down that road with her. It wasn't intellectually deep so I could see calling it "light" from that perspective but it wasn't light in the "fluffy, feel-good" sense. The writer's style of writing is good, I just didn't enjoy reading about Margie's messes--both self-made and those not of her making, her husband's criticism, and the implosion of her world. I felt sorry for her but definitely don't have any interest in traveling down that road with her.

Great fun!
Purchased this on a rainy evening because I enjoyed the author's other series. Next thing I knew, it was 3:00 a.m. and I had a new favorite series.First of all, this is nothing like The Gray Whale and the Dewberry Farm mysteries. If you prefer mysteries that are more cozy than flamboyant, and story lines more traditional than unlikely, I'd recommend the above. But if you're willing to go on a wilder ride - but still with no animals hurt, no gore, none of the things that we cozy lovers avoid - you won't be disappointed.I'm always a little cautious about books that are described as "laugh out loud" - I rarely do. But this one deserves the description. If you aren't already chuckling, try to describe the plot in a paragraph - that should prime the pump. The story is full of transvestites and Texans in stilettos and sequins, and our heroine, Margie, gets involved in some pretty sketchy (but also hilarious) predicaments. Sure, it stretches our "willing suspension of disbelief" a bit, but no more than other cozies - consider the homicide rate in Cabot Cove - but we are rewarded with fresh fun.

Loved it
A slow burn start but persevere as well worth it. I love Peaches character as a side kick with Becky but Margie is definitely a kick-ass kind of girl. Great plot

Great book,great characters,great writing.
The characters are fun, interesting and likeable. The heroine who is a busy slightly overweight mum of two finds herself working as a private detective and tackling a variety of cases including a murder ,some of which are a bit too close to home. While investigating she finds herself in some strange and amusing situations. The plotline is intriguing and never dull and the humour and humanity in the book are first rate.I would recommend this novel and hope the author extends it to a series as I'd love to see more of these characters.

A wow of a fun ride
I have to admit I was a bit dubious when I first started this book. It isn't a sloppy romance thank goodness. I think we are all old enough now to know that the handsome hunks in romances are going to be self absorbed and needy. Margie was very ditzy and a little tiresome at first. But then the story got going and it turned out to be really very good and kept me gripped right to the end. Well done.

Hugely Enjoyable
Well, this was a nice surprise! Didn't expect too much but this book had it all - a fast moving plot, plenty of villains, great characters and some very funny bits thrown in! It all starts when our heroine takes on a new job with a private detective and in the course of her first assignment stumbles across the body of a mouldered transvestite.....
