Seashore Life (A Golden Guide from St. Martin's Press)

A lot of info in a small package
Price and size are what makes this guide so great. It provides a good overview of the ocean and sealife in a very portable format, particularly for my young daughter to put in her pocket before we head off to the tidal poolsThe small size, however, means that the illustrations are not as large or detailed as we would prefer. It also limits the amount of specific information that can be included. We recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest and have found region-specific books (particularly from Lone Pine Publishers) to be superb. If you are looking for a more specific guide with marvelous illustrations, buy "Seashore of the Pacific Northwest" by I. Sheldon.I recommend this as a great resource at a very good price.

Still Golden!
Different covers to the same series I grew up with. (Yes, the illustrations, etc. are dated, but this is AWESOME for the young scientist/naturalist! A wonderful gift at a great price.

Wonderful guide - small - compact - but jam packed with interesting info
I like the vintage look of the illustrations in this guide and the photos are great - it is interesting and informative and easy to take on a trip. All the Little Golden guides are wonderful!!

My Grandson (5 yr old) and I love the Golden Field Guide Series
He just moved to WA state, so we added this to our collection of Golden Field Guides, he loves it.His favorite Golden Field Guide is one about dinosaurs, he will look at that for hours.

Bad Cover, Good Book
Disappointingly, these books no longer have the thick, sturdy covers with the reinforced corners that made them able to stand up to repeated use. St. Martin's Press has switched to cheaper covers cut the exact size of the pages (the old ones were slightly larger, offering protection to the page edges). The covers are thinner, too.I really wish they had raised the price a little more instead of putting such cheap covers on. These books are intended to be referenced often, carried in bags or pockets, traveled with, and some even include pages for you to record your own observations. I can't imagine how these new cheaply made editions are possibly going to stand up to that.

Seashore Life (Golden Field Guide)
I gave this to my 7 yr old son, who is a budding naturalist. A wonderful resource. Thanks again to St. Martin's Press for resurrecting this series!

OK, but nowhere near as good as newer guides.
I believe this guide is from the '50's and it shows. Art work is average and descriptions are limited. Still useful, but nothing like the Frogs and Toads book from Golden, for example. Book construction is good, however.
