Barbaro: America's Horse

No poster is included. Photo of cover is inaccurate and from a different printing.
I ordered this book *twice* and still did not get a book with a poster. The first time I bought a used book which had the poster already ripped out and not included, the second time I bought new and received a printing that never had a poster to begin with, even though the photo *clearly* indicates that it is the edition that includes a poster. My daughter loves the book itself, no issue there. She read it from the library initially and wanted the poster that came with it. If you only want the book, and do not care about the poster, this is great.

You don't have to be a child to enjoy this book!
Shelley Mickle says up front that she tried "to get inside the head and heart of Barbaro to help the reader understand fully his remarkable spirit and his inspiring story."Barbaro trusted his people and she understands that. She tells wonderful stories about him and the people who cared for him as a foal, and those who trained him as a yearling and a two-year-old. She builds on each of these life experiences to explain to the reader how Barbaro was able to tolerate being in a stall for eight months after his injury in the Preakness. The author interviewed Gretchen Jackson. She includes new insights from her, as well as a charming picture of a 6-week-old Barbaro.Shelley Mickle's respect and affection for Barbaro are apparent on every page. This book has heart and humor. It is a delight. Highly recommended.

Barbaro, America's Horse
This book although categorized as for children appeals to the child in me. It captures the personality and character of one Barbaro Jackson as I think it to have been...whatever, whatever, pass the food! I loved reading it and also treasure the pictures, especially the one of him as a "youngster".I also found interesting how Barbaro was trained, even before he went to Michael Matz and Peter Brette. Bill and Sandy Sanborn did a wonderful job, as did Barbaro's best friend, Last Best Place. It treats his death with tenderness and gentleness.

The ONLY complaint I have is: NOTenough pictures of BARBARO were included. I could easily have wantedat least dozens more. Barbaro: America's Horse
Although this book was written for children, I as an adult found it a very good read with great photos and explanations. I especially liked the personality of Barbaro threaded throughout the book which in turn provides children with the understanding that horses and other animals individually have character and intrinsic value. I would gladly recommend this book to both children and adults.
