Lots of 5 Star Reviews, But This Was a Basic Dog (Not An Extensive American Bulldog) Book.
I was influenced by the collection of 5 star reviews on this book. I owned a Scott/Johnson Hybrid American Bulldog and have experience with the breed. It is one of the greatest dog breeds ever. However, there are differences even within this breed. For example, the more brachycephalic Johnson type are less heat tolerant and can't hike the warmer countryside as well - and no this type of info was not in the book. I thought this book would concentrate in details about the function and types of American Bulldogs. I have read The Working American Bulldog by Dave Putnam, which I liked, but even that book did not receive all 5 stars from most reviewers like this book. So naturally I expected more. Instead, I received a book with basic dog info and some basic bulldog info. For example, on the topic of hiking, the author pretty much said make sure you bring a leash and a harness and that he doesn't take his dog out for more than two hours. Uh okay..... maybe try talking about how the different lines (e.g., Painter, Scott, Johnson, and Hybrids) would tackle different types of weather. I'm sorry but this book is so general that maybe you'd like it if you had no idea about the differences between the American Bulldog and the English Bulldog. However, for true enthusiasts of the breed, this book is not it. Then after the lack of specifically American Bulldog content - maybe good photos would save it somewhat? Nope, just newspaper quality black and white photos. This is a good dog care book, but I wanted an American Bulldog book. You could substitute another breed where American Bulldog was mentioned in this book, and it would most of the time apply. Two-star rating is generous.

Great for new owners
This book is more like a buying guide or beginner's manual for the American Bulldog. It covers a bit of history of AB's, along with other bulldog breeds, a portion about how to pick a puppy, what to buy before bringing your dog home, and a very, very tiny portion about actual training.I own an AB and I intended to give this book to my mother so she could have something to understand my dog better since she dog-sits, but this book wasn't a good fit. This is better for someone who's looking to buy the breed for the first time, not for someone who already owns one. This is a very good book for first time AB owners. The description pretty much captures what's inside the book spot on. I'm not able to benefit from this book since I was expecting more about training but I'm grabbing another book instead. I plan to keep this on hand to give to anyone who's considering bringing home their first AB.

Very important to have this American Bulldog guide
The book gives accurate guidelines on what to expect from your American Bulldog, and to understand what the puppy, and you, are going through, and provides consistent terminology the family can use to minimize conflict in commands to the puppy. It will help get your American Bulldog ready for trimming her toenails, grooming her, and preparing her for the care to be given to her during her lifetime. It helps to understand the importance of the kennel, in housebreaking, and giving the puppy a safe haven.

Good Introductory Basic Guidebook
As has already been stated in other reviews, this is a good book for novice AB parents, or those considering adding an AB, puppy or adult, to their family. If your a longtime, experienced AB owner and researcher there’s really nothing new for you in this book. I certainly don’t consider it to be the “bible” on ABs. Then again I don’t consider any single source to be the “bible” on ABs.AB breed history, bloodlines, and what makes for a “true” AB, at least in the eye of the beholder, has always been and always will be a hotly debated, controversial topic (Painter vs Scott vs Johnson vs Hybrid, etc.). Opinions on size, appearance, structure, color, and temperament are plentiful.Overall this is a good, basic guidebook to have on hand to help begin the education of those new to the AB.

American and other Bulldog breeds
What an informative book! I have friends that have Bulldogs, they are beautiful and the only breed they own. I was glad to learn that they do not do well with other pets, especially cats which we have 2. The owner of these American Bulldogs really needs to be ready to take one or two hour walks or runs daily to give the dog enough exercise. Also it looks like they are not happy alone and can chew up furniture. Very protective and loyal and a good dog for many people. They need a firm hand as they are strong minded, a faithful pet. The book has information onf the French Bulldog which seems more flexible with other pets and family. Over all, this is a good and wonderful strong minded animal. Easy read for anyone needing this information on the American Bulldog.

100% recommend for dog American Bulldog owners of any age or experience level!
Once I adopted my American Bulldog, I found myself wanting more details on training so and the breeder recommended this book, I ordered right away and WOW, Mark Manfield has fantastic advice and so far everything he recommends is absolutely working for us. I have had my puppy for less than a week and he hasn’t had any house accidents yet and has almost mastered “sit” commands. I highly recommend this book for American Bulldog owners of any age or experience!

Good for people with zero experience
Good for folks brand new to this great breed. Was hoping for more training beyond sit and stay. Not bad, just not what I wanted

Five Stars here! I Happy as can be with this American Bulldog Bible.
This book will teach you exactly how to choose your American Bulldog puppy (if you don't own one already), and how to train and get to know him/her quickly and effectively. Every aspect of the breed provided by the author is very well explained, so you should have no problems with your dog if it is your first time owning an American Bulldog. Definitely recommended!

Not really for American Bulldogs
It's more a book about dogs. AB are a unique breed this book is very general, not for AB specialists, nor was it written by one.
