Fans of the movie Willard can now finally add this odd little film to their home video collection. With a sparkling new 4K transfer, Willard has never looked this good even in theaters when I saw it in 1971. But wait! What's this? Audio commentary with Bruce Davison?!, YES! Original trailers and TV spots?! YES!!! A 71 count stills gallery and a brief (13 minutes approx.) on screen interview with Davison himself?!.A resounding YES!Truth is Willard is not a very scary movie, in fact, it plays a lot like a TV movie of the week. That's not to say there isn't a lot to like about this film. I like the use of odd angles and close ups when Willard has to deal with his mother's friends and family (played by some excellent character actors) Davison gives a very memorable performance as the title character, Ernest Borgnine plays the bullying Mr Martin convincingly, Elsa Lanchester (Bride of Frankenstein) as Willard's mother, who can resist such a treat? Also, Locke and Davison have good chemistry as a potential love affair in bloom.The music score is a bit odd for the first half, it's breezy sounding like something borrowed from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but, the second half's score is more dark and ominous and much more to my liking. I understand the building of tone from light to dark, but the first half score just seems out of place. The rats aren't all that terrifying, but I kind of enjoyed that fact that this film is based on reality and not some super charged CGI fest. The crown jewel of this film is Davison who will forever be the first thing I think about when I think of this film, his performance is underplayed and heartfelt.This new Blu Ray release is a must buy for fans of this film, it sports a beautiful 4K transfer, it has enough bonus features to make us believe Shout Factory really cared about this release. If I had one real disappointment it's that the sequel Ben wasn't included on this release. For one Ben's coinciding release was transferred from the best surviving elements, while it is acceptable considering the circumstances, it doesn't even come close to Willard's transfer. The film itself is almost a parody of Willard with unintentional laughter throughout and some of the worst hammy acting I've ever seen (by good actors no less!) Even as a kid I knew this movie was abysmal. So considering Ben isn't a very good movie and the transfer is a bit dicey, it would have been great to include it HERE and skip the DVD versions of the films.The audio commentary is pretty entertaining, though some if it is repeated tidbits from the interview. Davison is candid and I would think amazed at the lasting impression he created in fan's of this films memories. I don't recall seeing him all that much after this film, he was in a Walton's episode or two shortly after this film, but when I saw the first X Men film decades later I immediately knew who he was and was very happy to see him again. My favorite bonus on this release is the original theatrical trailer, it is without a doubt one of the best edited trailers ever made. I'm not kidding, the editor should have received an Oscar for this thing. When I first saw this trailer I was hooked instantly and most fans of this film recite the dialogue the way it is edited in the trailer over the actually film version. "You made me hate myself! but I like myself now! Tear em up! The trailer is a masterpiece of editing and really sets us up for a little bit of a let down, the film really doesn't live up to the promises of the trailer. Regardless, I'm a big fan of this film, Davison was forever etched in my brain after seeing this film and while I have had a burned copy on DVD from VHS I was only too happy to finally see a legitimate release of this film on Home Video especially looking so beautiful.Quick recap, great transfer, bonuses include commentary, stills gallery, interview with the star and trailers including radio and TV spots. Blu Ray and DVD discs included BUY IT! Nuff Said..........

I haven't read any of the reviews yet but here's mine and I am glad to see this movie ten thousand percent restored the way it should have always been! No...No scenes have been fully restored or scenes added to give it that special look and quality. Back in the 1980's, Willard was still very popular on television after it's 1974 television premiere. In the 1980's, several movies lost they're original releasing-distributors. For all those many years, Willard carried no distributor except for BCP. Now, for the first time since even it's video priemere in 1985, I am proud to say Willard now carries the name of the distributor: From Cinerama Releasing! And it is great! I first saw Willard at Park Forest Theater in downtown Farmers Branch, Texas, in June of 1971 with my family and that made it all the more special. I'm the only one still alive today as my family have all passed since 2005. Willard carries special memories for me, even with the Cinerama Releasing banner. Willard was a character I could closely identify with because of his always being bullied. I hope you enjoy the suspense because that it is. Willard came out 7 years before Halloween. Long before anyone adapted Michael Myers as their favorite movie monster, their was Ben and his army of rats in Willard. All the bad copies of Willard out there are history. When I saw Willard was coming out after all these years, I immediately put in my pre-order. I have had it since May 16, 2017 and I have been watching it unceasingly.If you haven't already, order Willard and watch it. WHERE YOUR NIGHTMARES END, WILLARD BEGINS!

Had no problem streaming, I would buy from this company again.

Disclaimer: I won’t review the film itself, only the release/transfer. I mean, of course I think it’s good, why else would I have bought it?I’ve been watching Willard since I was a kid, they used to show it on Saturday afternoons with other horror fare, Roger Corman Poe adaptations, lesser known Karloff and Lugosi vehicles, Hammer, 50’s Atomic Monsters, that kind of stuff. So my memories always have this on little black and white screens like the TV in the basement when I grew up. Eventually I saw it in color on a bigger screen, and already liking the film, got a lot more out of it.And, you know, Borgnine is always amazing. Anyway:The transfer of the blu is stunning. It’s so clear and the colors so vivid, they don’t overdo the grain and just very clear and precise. You can lick the sweat off Borgnine’s textured face.Not too much on extras, promo spots, but a whole Bruce Davison commentary, which is worth it. Good job Shout Factory!

That headline "Makes Hitchcock's 'The Birds' Look Like a Walk in the Park" was the tagline when this film was advertised in the local paper in the theater listings when I was ten years old. I had only been told about how scary "The Birds" was when I saw "Willard" come out in 1971. I cut out every display ad for this film from the newspaper and stuck them on my wall, until my father finally relented and took me to see this at the theater. He said to me "don't dare tell your mother I took you to see this" and it's one of my best memories of childhood.The film is not scary at all by today's standards, but how can you go wrong when a guy is bullied at work and gets his revenge by using an army of rats! Ernest Borgnine makes a great evil boss to be certain. Later, as a teenager, I had several pet rats, just because of this movie.Five stars for the nostalgia and relatively high quality being better than I remembered.

Ok, der Titel war übel.Nach Einlegen der Scheibe mit dem Label Willard sah man die Titelseite von Ben und beim Einlegen von Ben die von Willard. Man hatte also beim Druck gepennt und die Label auf den Filmen vertauscht. Aber zum Glück sind beide Filme in der Box enthalten. Doof nur, dass das Ende des ersten Teils auf dem Rückentext des 2. Teils vorweggenommen wird.  Über 30 Jahre gabs beide Filme nicht zu kaufen und verschwanden in der Versenkung!Es handelt sich bei Willard um den ersten Rattenhorrorfilm. Besonderheit war, dass echte Ratten eine Hauptrolle spielen. Als gelehrige Nager, die intelligent sind und äußerst zahm werden können war das keine schlechte Wahl. Zudem gibt es viele Menschen, die eine Abneigung gegen die eigentlich putzigen Tiere haben, die aus einem Jahrhunderte alten - unfreiwilligen - Zusammenleben herrührt, das selten harmonisch war und aufgrund von Parasiten, die die Ratte befielen damals zu einer wirklich üblen Pandemie führte, die weite Landstriche Europas in kürzester Zeit entvölkerte.Willard ist ein Sonderling, der von seiner Mutter gegängelt, von deren Rentner Freunden ausgenutzt und von seinem A-lochchef getrietzt wird. Man kann sehr gut nachvollziehen wie er tickt und warum er was macht. Es ist eher Psychogramm gepaart mit einer kleinen Prise Tierhorror, da Ben recht undurchsichtig erscheint und er seinen eigenen Rattenkopf hat. Aber auch seine späteren Handlungen kann man nachvollziehen als Willard sein Leben umgekrempelt und sich eine niedliche Sekretärin an Land gezogen hat und es ist geradezu hinterfotzig wie er ist als er seine einstigen und einzigen Freunde nicht mehr braucht. Diejenigen, die ihn akzeptierten wie er war und gesellschaftlich noch auf einer niedrigeren Akzeptanzstufe als er selbst standen.Nachdem Willard als Riesenerfolg und Urvater aller Tier-Rachefilme gelaufen war, hatte man sich schnell zu einer Fortsetzung entschieden. Die macht viel falsch, aber auch viel richtig. So beginnt der Film Ben mit dem Ende des Films Willard und schließt nahtlos ans Geschehen an. Sehr gut empfand ich die Titelwahl. Während Willard den ersten Film auch namentlich trug, war es nur folgerichtig, dass dieses Mal Ben die Ehre zuteil wurde.Zwar ist das agierende Kind ein ebensolcher Sonderling wie Willard. Anders als dieser jedoch versucht er sich nicht der Ratten zu entledigen, sondern er begibt sich unter Einsatz seines Lebens in Gefahr für Ben um ihn zu retten. Er sieht in ihn einen echten Freund und Ben schenkt ihm wiederum mit der Zeit sein Vertrauen und seine Freundschaft. Das ist eigentlich eine schöne Umkehr der Charaktere und der Kreis schließt sich letztlich. Eine Wohltat für das gepeinigte Killerrattenherz.So muss auch der hartgesottene Cop sogar seinen Gegnern Anerkennung zollen. Ein bisschen Ökomessage darf halt in 70er Tierfilmen nicht fehlen.Allerdings - und hier kommt dann das Schlechte - macht es den Film komplett überflüssig, da das Horrorelement anders als im ersten Film komplett untergeht, da man trotz aller Nervigkeit dem Kind nichts Böses abgewinnen kann und auch Ben hier wohl nur versucht zur Ruhe zu kommen. Es ist eine speziesübergreifende Freundschaft, wobei Ben nie zum Haustier gerät. Eine Art "Ekel" Lassie wie Lassie hat im ersten Teil gekillt und will im zweiten gut Freund sein und alles fressen was es für ihn und seine riesige Familie gibt. Aber man lässt ihn nicht. Da muss man ja töten!Die Story lässt etwas mit den Ratten fiebern obwohl sie ja eigentlich die Gefahr sein sollen. Im ersten Teil hingegen schien Ben mit Willard um die Vorherrschaft des Rudels zu konkurrieren.Für den Film trug der damals 13 jährige Michael Jackson den gleichnamigen Song vor."Ben most people would turn you away(Turn you away)I don’t listen to a word they say(A word they say)They don’t see you as I do, I wish they would try toI’m sure they’d think again, if they had a friend like BenLike BenLike BenLike Ben."...Richtig gelesen, ohne Ben keinen ersten Solo No. 1 Hit von Michael Jackson, der mit Preisen überhäuft wurde. Eine Freundschaftserklärung an eine Ratte. Und seltsamerweise lässt der herzerwärmende Song nicht nur in die Disneypsyche eines armen totkranken Jungens blicken sondern man fühlt auch mit unserem pelzigen Killer Ben.Background : Willard war tiertechnisch ziemlich aufwändig. Der erste Teil wurde mit 550 Ratten gefilmt. Es gab auch einige animatronische Ratten. BEN ist eine "African Gambian"-Ratte, die ausgewachsen fast Katzengröße erreichen können. Die Tiere sind jedoch in den Staaten gezüchtet worden. Allerdings gab es nur eine Handvoll Züchter für den Typ Ratte, da sie sich schlecht in der Gefangenschaft vermehren. Es hatte diesen Typ Ratte zuvor auch noch nie einer ausgebildet. Die acht Tiere, die Ben spielten überraschten die Tiertrainer jedoch mit ihrer gelehrigen Art.Sokrates ist eine norwegische Albino Ratte gewesen. Es gab 10 Tiertrainer. Vor und nach jeder Szene wurden alle Ratten eingeschlossen damit sie keine Nische zum Verschwinden suchten und außerdem gewogen damit sie nicht übersättigt waren um zu arbeiten. Jede war unter dem Schwanz nummeriert. Eine Szene dauerte je nach Art zwischen 30 Minuten und drei Stunden.Über drei Monate hinweg gelang es dem zuständigen Puppentrickhersteller Lazzarini drei animatronische Bens, zwei nicht animatronische Bens, einen animatronischen Sokrates, drei nicht animatronische Sokrates, 20 statische Ratten für nahe Schüsse und 200 (!) Ratten für den Hintergrund zu schaffen.Kurzum: Das Ratten Spektakel ist jetzt kein Blockbusterkinoknaller aber unterhaltsam mit vielen fleißigen und liebenswerten Nagern.

Quel film. Quels acteurs. Quel plaisir de le revoir. Maintenant que je l'ai, je mettrai dans ma vidéothèque. J'adore les années 70 avec ses films où l'on s'perçoit du grand changement qu'il y a eu. Peut être un trop grand pas même. Bien évidemment que j'aime beaucoup le ciné d'aujourd'hui. Mais quand on revoie des anciens films, il y avait du poids. Les histoires avaient des racines. le scénario en béton avec une Aura tout au long du film et des acteurs si juste avec un pouvoir fascinant. Cet acteur brillant , Bruce Davisson, a parfaitement adopter les mimiques d'un gamin de 8 huit ans et celle du jeune homme timide jusqu' à l'homme qui n'avait plus peur comme il l'a d'ailleurs laissé entendre dans le film mais... mais il était trop tard. Et que dire d'Ernest Borgnine?????Manquerait il de magie dans le cinéma d'aujourd'hui où il faut toujours faire mieux que l'autre ou que le précédent?????? Ne voudrait il pas mieux penser à développer un scénario en ne pensant qu'à cela. Un film qui devient unique qui s'impose comme un symbole pour devenir un film CULTE. Et revenir un peu plus aux effets spéciaux plus naturel.
