Excellent Tool, Maybe a Bit Too Long
If you use a wood burning fireplace insert or wood stove for heat inside your home, you need a good quality ash rake. Otherwise, you'll be throwing away fuel (unburned embers) with the ashes every time you clean out your firebox.A good ash rake should be able to separate the decent sized (~0.5 inch diameter) coals from the ash so as to allow them to completely burn. The head of that rake should have two sides - one that has "teeth", and one that's smooth like a hoe. This ash rake has both. The flat (top) side of the rake head is perfect for pushing everything to the back of the firebox before you rake the coals forward for complete burning. The teeth are spaced far enough apart (& shaped properly) to grab the coals and pull them forward in the firebox, while leaving most of the ashes behind. As supplied, the rake comes in two parts - the handle and the head. The head is attached to the handle by fastening two self-locking (nylon insert) threaded stainless nuts. The stainless bolts are welded to the rake head so they won't come loose. The manufacturer even includes a little wrench you use when assembling the rake. It's about as hassle free as you could expect. This ash rake is almost perfect for my use at home. "Almost" only because I find it about 12 inches too long. It's 40.5" long. My other hearth iron tools are about 28-30" long. The seller also offers a 22.5" long ash rake (also stainless). That one would probably be too short unless you're wearing nice thick leather gloves when working near a stove full of coals radiating heat. I guess it's better that the rake be a bit too long versus too short.Overall, though, I find this rake a VERY useful tool in keeping my home warm using a Quadra-Fire 2700i insert.

High Quality...A couple of changes could further improve functionality.
Bought this for my daughter’s use in her outdoor wood-fired boiler. High quality product. Her suggestions for future fabrication would be to widen the head by a few inches and to make the handle about 12-15” longer. It works well, but with those changes, it could work even better.

Finally into cold enough weather to fire up the outdoor wood stove so this is the first chance we have gotten to use this ash rake. It is just perfect. The serrated edge pulls the logs forward for a more even burn and the flat side smooths out the ash. It is just the right length to reach the back of the wood stove without getting too close to get burned. It is fabulous!

Quality Item
We are using this as a fire pit rake and are happy with it; it is well made, does the job, reasonably price, partic. when you find junk in the big box stores, etc. at high prices that are throw-away tools.

WRONG DIMENSIONS, IT IS ONLY 22 1/2"!!!!
I was so disappointed. It very clearly states that this ash rake is 40 1/2" long, and it is only 22 1/2" long. I would burn up trying to rake the ashes in my woodstove with a rake this short.
