Chromex MagGrip Magnet Wire Puller System

I needed to pull 2 separate speaker wires 30' across the ceiling in my garage between the ceiling joists. The ceiling is unfortunately OSB. The ceiling is extremely well insulated with thick kraft paper faced bats that are covered with lots of blown in insulation. In several places the kraft paper has stuck to the OSB. A fish tape will not work and my wire fish rods would get stuck or climb up into the insulation. I tried a smaller, less powerful, magnet and I was able to get about half way across the garage with the first wire. I was not able to get past the insulation being stuck to the OSB. I picked the Chromex MagGrip system over their primary competitor Magnepull because I was hoping they were using more and stronger magnets.It was challenging getting past the stuck insulation. The magnet in the ceiling punched a hole thru the kraft facing and I fought the additional drag and tearing the insulation free for 12'. I was ultimately successful and the second wire was quick and easy.A few thoughts:1. I was fighting the insulation for about a minute, standing on the 10' ladder, and the puck slipped out of my hand and bounced off the concrete floor. I was sure it was busted after a fall like that. I was wrong. It's a tough plastic that took the hit with only a scuff. I immediately tied a tether to the handle to prevent another encounter with the floor. ATTN CHROMEX: AN ATTACHMENT RING FOR A SAFETY LINE WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.2. The felt surface is nice and fancy and appropriate for smooth painted surfaces. The felt surface is completely inappropriate for OSB and every other surface. I cut a section of a thin plastic cutting board to go between the puck and OSB to allow me to slide the puck. Now I had 2 things to manage on the ladder. ATTN CHROMEX: HAVING INTERCHANGEABLE CONTACT SURFACES WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL.3. The included woven plastic tow line is a large diameter and very stiff. It retains its memory of being wrapped around a tiny little spool. When it's removed from the spool to go to work, it stays in a snarled mess. This wouldn't be that big of deal accept the tow line has the fittings for the rest of the kits fittings on both ends making it a necessary component of the system. After I worked with the line in the sun I was able to get most of the tight loops to relax. I wrapped the line into the biggest loop I could fit under the lid of the box so next time it should be better. ATTN CHROMEX: DITCH THE TINY SPOOL. REDESIGN THE KIT TO WRAP THE TOW LINE AROUND A LARGE DIAMETER CENTRAL CAVITY WHERE ALL THE COMPONENTS CAN BE STORED.Overall it's a good system. I have quite a bit of wire to pull, eventually, so I will be using it many times. I will update as required.

Initially had an issue with the clamshell case, however the vendor replaced it and I am happy to say the new one appears free from any issue. The tool itself absolutely gets the job done. Easy to change leader. STRONG Magnets. Very important, includes both magnetized and non-magnetized (but Ferrous and magnet attracted) leader. Typically you would use the magnetic leader, however if you are dealing with steel stud, or other spaces containing a lot of metal, the magnetic leader can get hung up, but the non-magnetized leader will work like a charm!

I bought this for a relatively simple application, and it did the job well. i pulled a nylon lead through 400' of 1.5" PVC (before burying). It was very simple to do. The magnet is very strong. In two instances my spool of nylon cable got hung up at the feed point, and the magnet detached. But it was quite easy to relocate (the included lead cable is a bit springy) and continue. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

Easy to use. Great way to tun wire in congested areas. Like cheating

Overall, a great designed and manufactured tool. Works as advertised. The magnet is super strong and all the parts are good quality. The storage container makes keeping all the parts in one place. I tend to misplace parts and the storage container for this prevents that from happening.
