Read and Write Hindi Script: A Teach Yourself Guide (TY: Language Guides)

I haven't found another book that has been as perfectly comprehensible as this one. Something about its style of teaching writing and reading in Devangaari just works for me. It is super dry though and strictly a practice book (meaning, not much teaching in the grammar and other stuff aspect). You are learning to write and building vocabulary to read. Plain and simple.

Before I read this book, I had no idea how Devanagari worked. Now that I have worked through the book, I feel like I have a much better handle on things. I can read the Sanskrit in my Gita books fairly well. The exercises build on the material extremely well and keep you learning. The only downside that I see to this book is that I didn't find an introduction to how the words are pronounced. I found sounds for each syllable, but not when put together. Other than that, this is a fantastic resource for how to read and write the script. I highly recommend it.

I'm brand new to learning hindi but the book breaks down learning to read and write so well that it's not a problem. The info in the first chapter is really helpful. If you're like me in the sense that you need a little bit of background info then get this book. It does help, however, if you have additional publications in Hindi and/or can watch the films (which is also suggested in the book) so you can locate the characters as you go along and listen for pronunciation. Besides that, this teach yourself guide makes it very easy to learn. Best wishes to you!

So far this book seems to be one of the easier ones for learning Hindi; but I have not delved too deeply into it yet. Since people learn in different ways, some people may prefer a different style. I appreciated the pronunciation clues because, why bother to learn words, or script, if you don't know what they sound like? So, for me, I recommend this author; having studied a bit of calligraphy, it wasn't too hard to write the words either. However: I'm a far cry from speaking this language at present...next thing needed is a CD to hear a native speaker using the language.

I adore this book. When I got it, I was even dreaming of Hindi letters! It has an easy to understand explanation of Hindi, it covers the vowels and the consonants, as well as the vowel signs. Hindi uses Sanskrit script. I have worked with Sanskrit and this book is very encouraging even with it. These are difficult languages, but books as this make it easier and takes the sting out. This book is a great first step. I'd also recommend the "Practice Makes Perfect" Hindi workbook.

Great book, but the print is microscopic. Learning a new alphabet (for me) benefits from large type, writing instructions and writing practice. Sound of the characters is a little vague to me, but perhaps that is inevitable for a printed book. Overall, it was a good effort. The "step-by-step" concept here is quite good.

I am a lover of languages and have always been drawn to Indian culture and religion. I would say this guide is not only easy to follow, but intense in its progression of the alphabet and its uses. I also purchased Complete Hindi, and the Hindi dictionary from the same author, and would recommend this trilogy for anyone interested in this fascinating language.

One of my regrets in life is not learning another language, so I decided to try and learn a language very different from my own. The book is for beginners and easy to understand. Like anything worth learning you do need to devote time to the subject. The author has good insights to the language and is even entertaining to read. Worthwhile book.

This is just an amazing book. If you want to be able to read and write the Hindi script, and particularly, if like me you already can speak and understand it, then you need no other book. This books guides you through the steps of writing and reading from the basics. The exercises are great and helpful. You'll be an expert in no time.

Ich habe selten so ein schlechtes Buch gesehen. Das ist eine Serie "Teach yourself". Ich habe mir selbst mehr als zehn Sprachen selbst beigebracht, ich kann aber mit diesem Buch überhaupt nichts anfangen. Sogar die erste Seite ist zu schwierig (ich habe aber von dem Buch viel mehr gelesen, ohne Erfolg).
