Stories and expertise that will heal and shape women’s relationships
I’m a licensed psychologist and eating disorders specialist, personally recovered and now helping others recover. I worked at a treatment center for 13 years and wish this book had been around then. Dr. McBride quickly gets to the heart of what contributes to and maintains eating disorders, and provides a clear sense of knowledge and expertise on the topic. What I love even more is her personal depth and compassionate narrative style, paired with positive examples of what works. There are too many negative, detailed memoirs out there that lack hope or useful direction and that is not what you’ll find here. Instead, you’ll find a genuine concern for women and girls of all ages, and some specific behavioral guidance and wisdom. Every woman should read it.

I know this will be one I re-read again and again!
I came across this title as a reference in another book, just by the title I knew it was one I needed to add to my collection. As I read through it I found myself working through some hard memories from my past, as well as current situations. I have a list of friends I will be buying this book for. The content helps in so many various ways. It has opened my eyes to family and friends who need more empathy and understanding more often, also my perceptions with who I am and where I need to focus and work through to process the emotions that have been stifled for so long. And it doesn't just stop with females, a lot of it applies for males as well. Thank you Hillary for this beautiful piece! I am so grateful I came across this work! I highly recommend for anyone.

Should be required reading
As a registered dietitian focusing on helping families create a healthy relationship with food (and mom of a girl), I can't believe I just now found this book. McBride does an amazing job of showing the reader how to help raise girls to have a healthy body image. The stories, research, and her own personal anecdotes bring these concepts to life. I will recommend this book often and reread it for years to come. I would give it 10 stars if I could!

A must for parents of daughters!
As a mother of a young daughter and an eating disorders therapist myself, I was extremely impressed by this informative, authentic exploration of how our relationships with our mothers/children can impact women's experiences of themselves and their bodies- sometimes with heartbreaking consequences. Writing in a genuine, emotionally honest and academic voice, Hillary McBride provides readers with real-life experiences that we can relate to, learn from, and apply to our lives. All the counselling training and ED scholarship in the world can mean little when you try to find the words to teach your own children about healthy body image, and McBride has provided us with a vehicle (and in some passages, the exact words themselves) with which to do so. I HIGHLY recommend it!
