Blackwood is a long story about wood for music. Its genesis stem from my long treks through dense jungles of South Pacific and SEA in the 1970's ad 1984's. I have seen the carnage inflicted to fragile system at time no one was aware of what was being one in the name of progress. Huge swaths of native forests were turned to wasteland, and the planned reforestation never took place. Weather patterns changed too rapidly. In order to reach few prized trees of ebony, rosewood and vitex much damage was inflicted to soil and waterways and hundreds of lesser trees were cleared to reach the desired trees. Where it rained daily for few hours, usually in the afternoons, droughts become reality, with periods of up to 18 months without drop of rain. Scrubby bush was cinder dry and it only needed a spark. Massive bush fires destroyed, what escaped the chainsaws. There was nothing to fight the fires with. Lush green tropical paradise was turn into moon face arid deserts. I am describing region of Bulolo in Papua New Guinea. I decided to pay some of my debts to Mother Nature. Embarked on a research project, which could turn ordinary plantation fast growing softwood into durable, hard and strong hardwood, the demand for the precious last few ebony trees in the wild will be greatly reduced. That is essentially the story of Blackwood. Blackwood Co is committed to the development of friendly technologies and industries in the field of modified wood, new bio-materials and bio-fuels from agricultural wastes. Blackwood team includes scientists from Universities of Melbourne and Waterloo.
