The Classic Slave Narratives

A really great book on a handful of slave narratives
Some of the parts of the narratives throughout the book were really sad along with how impressive it was to see these individuals witness and with some experience first hand what slavery was like along with how they managed to overcome their struggles and fight through the difficulties that some had to experience. I highly recommend this as a read. It really had a profound affect and really gives you a good idea of the harsh conditions that they along with others had to face.

Great Narratives
This collects some of the greatest and most important slave narratives. It includes the first known slave narrative ever written by Olaudah Equiano (A.K.A. Gustavus Vassa). That was probably my favorite one out of all of them because it was very adventurous. It is also intriguing because it was the first narrative ever published from a Black person. All of these narratives are great, and you can really learn a lot about the history of slavery within the pages of this book.If you love reading black literature, you should definitely pick this book up.

A Must Read!!!
I'm so glad to have purchased this book!! I was a teenager during the Civil Rights Movement and there were little to no indepth stories or articles about the lives/experiences of my ancestors during the slave years. Oh sure, we heard or read about such notables as Harriet Tubman, the 'Moses' of the Underground Railroad, Frederick Douglas, andd George Washington Carver, and others, but this narrative gives the reader an insight into the lives of some of the obscure individuals, not mentioned in history books. This book or others similar should be read in addition to the history books about the founding of the United States.

Great Read
Slavery in America was brutal. Too many times in history we do not hear the slave’s voice, so these stories were very powerful. Eye opening encounters, just the complete hypocrisy that ran through the veins of masters. If anything, this Fredrick Douglass’ story shows the importance of education. Good primary sources that were straightforward. This was a required class text.

Great price, but just be aware…
I received my copy of “The Classic Slave Narratives” fairly quickly, which was very nice. I ordered and paid for it as “new” so I had to double check that I really did buy it new when I saw that it had some scuff marks and tiny tears at the top corner. I’m not picky, but since I bought it new, I expected it to be a new book that’s in perfect condition. Otherwise, it’s in great condition with all of the pages intact.

Real People, Real Lives
This book told first-hand stories of slave life here in the U.S., England and the Carribean. I have read other books that described the daily life of a slave, but hearing it from an actual slave hits home harder. It is good to revisit our history so we do not repeat it.

Don't read if you have depression
Very moving and just kind of "tell it like it is". The writing style is very easy to read and understand. I had to purchase this for a college class, and found that I didn't have an easy time putting it down. Not for the very depressed or light of heart. Also, it's interesting to do some background research on the slaves in the narratives and see what happened to them and what happened to their owners.
