8x magnification renders outer edges of viewing frame blurry when reading a book, thus critically reducing viewing area, and requiring constant movement of viewer or book in order to read a full line of print. Nonetheless, the 8x unit may be useful for projects requiring only a narrow viewing area in the center of the frame and a limited space beneath the viewing frame. The unit sems well constructed. The support arm can be manouvered in all directions and it holds steady wherever you leave it. The lens is glass and provides a high quality image. The light provided is bright and illuminates the targt appropriately. The clamp is metal and secures the lamp well to a desk. I rated the item 5 stars because it appears to be a quality item when used for a task it was designed for. It did not work for me, and I returned it, because it is problematic when attempting to read a book.

Great Product. Make sure you mount it level or the light will swing around instead of staying in place.

The product picture shows a vent in the bottom of the lamp base, mine has no such vent. After 5 months of great service (I use it about 10 hours every day) it started to flicker when first turned on until it would not come on at all. I installed a new bulb but it still would not work. I Decided to take the bottom cover off next to the light bulb area to see if the ballast could be easily replaced. I found a small "Printed Circuit Board" with many semiconductors. Since there was no vent what so ever in that compartment and there is an unvented clear cover over the bulb. There is no way for the heat generated by the bulb to dissipate. I have concluded that this constant heat cooked the PC board.

This is a replacement for my old (similar) wood shop light that I had for about 20 years and it finally died. This light is vastly improved over the last light. The construction is more sturdy and the wiring is better. I found that mounting the light in the tray area using a 2X2 with a drilled hole the size of the shaft instead of the clamp was a much more steady base for the light. I secured the light with a wooden block with two self tapping screws. The light allows me access by extension to my entire work bench. This light is "awesome"!!!

10 Jan 2018My critque–––It's somewhat cheaply made. The optics are a bit poor and the positioning/articulation is somewhat awkward and dificil. The LEDs, I would say, are of medium brilliance and are of a cool-white color temperature.–––Richard Stuart Otto

Structure substantial, lighting and magnification just right. It's in my shop so the dust cover will keep it clean.

This clamp-on desk lamp is great. I purchased it for my armorer's bench, it is great to have some extra direct light and the ability to get a sharper look at smaller parts, etc. The unit stays in which ever position you put it in, I highly recommend this product.

Works great! Excellent magnification! A bit on the heavy side but if you can leave it in one place, you're good to go!
