Sleeping in the collar may not harm the dog, but think how uncomfortable it would be. Please show a little love to your dog and think of its comfort. Sheesh.

You're supposed to measure the neck of your dog, not old collars. The sizes of these collars are based on the neck size, and not a measure of how long the collar actually is. There should be a pic on the description that shows how the size is determined on these collars. I just measured my dog's neck where the collar would rest and based on that I picked the collar I wanted. I.e if it falls within 2 ranges then you can choose the one that will buckle at the last hole or move to the next size up where it buckles close to the shortest hole (purely aesthetic). This worked for my dog and personal taste.
