The All-New Woodworking for Kids

Great book for new young woodworkers
I was so happy when my oldest daughter who is 10 said she wanted to join me in my woodshop. I started her on a monthly subscription youth woodworking thing where they would send precut projects every month. Good concept but too basic for her. I have tons of woodworking books but most projects too advanced for a young beginner. This book fit the bill on what we were looking for. Has projects for every aspect of woodworking for beginners from aids to project that they can build. I had her read all the stuff on safety and tool usage. Being a woodworker myself I have all the tools so she didn't have to do everything by hand after some teaching by me. I included pictures of her first project she made for her mom for mother's day. Other than using the table saw she did everything herself. Layed out the cuts, used the miter saw, sanded, glued, drilled and finished the project with me just keeping an eye on her. She just picked out her own lumber to start making more for Christmas presents. You can make everything with basic hand tools and no knowledge as the adult.

Projects in the Book
We just bought this book for our 13 year old son. He was very excited about the projects in the book. The projects include:A workbench (4'x2' and 30" tall), miter box, tool box, compass tool, bench hook, assorted bird houses, a squirrel feeder, standing cat scratching post, dog house for a small dog, critter observation station, bike stand, 2 toy boats, rope ladder (like the kind you would use for a tree house), a scooter, 8' balance beam, baseball shelf (holds bat, glove and balls), curio-type shelf, jewelry tree, desktop organizer, study partner (holds your book open), table top easel, a heart box (the heart is added as a sort of handle, could cut a different shape, the box is like a shoebox), place card holders, key rack (holds keys), media tower for dvds or cds, travel checkers, airplane, drum, and a tesselation bird puzzle. The pictures are very good and clearly show the finished item. The directions appear easy to follow. Time estimates are given for each project varying from a few hours to 6-8 hours to 8-12 hours.Powering off the pc/video games and headed to Lowe's this weekend to get supplies for the workbench and the dog house....

Well done book
I think I got a little too optimistic about how engaged my two grandsons would be ( they are 6 and 8). We are going to try this again when they are a little older,

Awesome
I was searching for a woodworking book with projects I could do with my son (he’s six). Most other “woodworking” kids books have projects with popcicle sticks. This book is amazing! It has shopping lists, tool lists, exploded views and excellent step by step directions.I do have a tip though that I learned from watching This Old House’s “House One”, do all the big cuts the night before you have your kid help. This will make doing the project much more fun.

Good book for budding woodworkers (and their Dads)!
Lots of full color illustrations and clever ideas. Instructions are straightforward and age appropriate. I got this as a gift for my nephew (10 years old), whose Dad already has a woodshop. The idea was that the book would provide ideas for projects they could do together, at a level where my nephew would be able to do most of the work, with some assistance from Dad. The book is perfect for that purpose, and I think they are going to have a lot of fun together with it.

On to the next project....
My 9 year old grandson loves this book. We've made a dozen other projects together, but this book still provided new thoughts, and even better more energy to pursue even more.

Looked like a very good start for us and we were right. The first thing the grand kids wanted to make was the ladder. So, now we have a ladder to no where...yet.

The Perfect Book for a Tween
This book is excellent. The first section includes an age appropriate description of tools and different woods. The colorful pictures in the book are helpful and engaging. The project section includes projects that a child might really like to make. I love the shopping list for each project that makes it easy for the builder to know what exactly he or she needs to make a project. The time estimates for each project are realistic. So far, the projects our tween has built have required either little or minimal adult help. The young builder can really do it by himself or herself. (Not the first time our child has worked with wood.) I love this book!

Very relevant ideas for kids!
The projects are relevant. It was a gift for my 71/2 year old grandson to do wood project with his dad so he could use his tools. His dad and grandpa think it is great for him!

Great ideas for budding, young Extreme Makeover enthusiasts
This book just arrived and we haven't actually made anything from it yet but very impressed with the content. Gives you a full glossary of tools at the beginning and ideas to help you throughout the book. Each item tells you what tools and material are required and a rough guide as to how long the project should take. Colourful photos of fun and useful things to make. Looks like we have a busy summer on our hands!

Modern Carpentry Book
Excellent book. Very modern with useful projects so you don't end up making things you have no use for. I am so pleased with this book and can't wait for my 10yr old son to open this on Christmas day. He is going to love it. Highly recommended for age 9-10 and up (in my opinion).
