And it gives illustrations of the different styles. I found this book to be inspirational. I highly recommend it. Very good for a beginner.

This book teaches simplicity and focus through meditation with ink and brush. Anyone interested in a practical approach to the art of calligraphy or sumie painting would enjoy this book. I certainly enjoyed it and look forward to coming back to it again.

I have reviewed dozens of texts concerning the art of Shodo, but this one really stands out as exceptional. I'm familiar with the work of one of its translators, zen master John Stevens, who also wrote  Sacred Calligraphy of the East .What's really interesting about this book is how you can really see the variety in approaches to the same form of even the same subject. There is a great page that shows the same character done by the same artist but at three different ages. Because of the simplicity of the art form you can see how styles differ and/or progress and reflect the state of the practitioner.

After studying Calligraphy here in Switzerland for a couple of years, I was looking for information beond the "technical" side of the calligraphie. In the book of Tanchu Terayama, I found importand and excellent explantions about the ZEN line, detailled and step by step instructions for the warming up. All informations are written in a clear way, so I was able to enjoy every single page and got a lot of inspirations.

It is since one year that I am trying to paint as written in several books I have read about the EDO-period in Japan. This book tells the basics about the background of the Zen-paintings which I was missing in other books. The book is clearly and understandable written.

Excellent book about Shodo, japanese art of calligraphy. Antique and Terayama sensei's pictures are superb, great election.Excelente libro sobre Shodo, el arte de la caligrafía japonesa. Las pinturas, tanto las antiguas como las del propio maestro Terayama, son increibles, una gran elección.

本文は英語だが、写真が多いので、エクササイズはその写真を見て行える。一般的な「書道」とは違う「書」のあり方を提示している。　養気法で「気」を整え、集中して線を書く。２０年ほど前に関口宏のテレビ番組で、実際に筆者が登場して紹介されたものでもある。　まずは、この本の通りにやってみることをすすめる。線の質とか墨色とか勢いとか、そんなことを言う前に、楽しさが実はある。
