Look at the bird, describe it and write it down.
My aunt from Pennsylvania was coming for a visit and I wanted to introduce her to the world of birding. She has the perfect setting to attract and observe these beautiful and at times comical feathered creatures. I’m new to new birding myself in Arkansas and I had purchased the Arkansas version. It was easy to use from the git go. It Is divided by colors which points a newbie in the right direction. The observation advice is right on. Look at the bird, describe it and write it down. THEN, go to the book to start identification. I now have 3 other reference books at my disposal BUT I start with this one first. It is small so it travels well. One suggestion for those just starting to spread their wings in this realm in the sky. Buy yourself a small pocket size memo or steno pad and keep it ready at a window so you jot down your description. There are several birding sites on Facebook to help you as well. Happy birding!

Recomended
This book is pocket size, can be carried around and is colored coded for quick access in Identifying birds that are in Pennsylvania year round to migrating visitors. The color code helps new birders and seasoned birders this way, for example: if you see a yellow bird, look in the yellow colored coded section, this will give you what yellow birds that are seen in Pennsylvania. Same with brown birds, gray birds, red birds, green birds, white birds, blue birds and more.Color plates of the male/female birds are a plus, and the field notes are very educational. If your a beginning birder or a seasoned veteran, this book is a wonderful asset to any birding library.I have now ordered the CD of bird songs that is a companion to this book, when it comes, I will write a asset review of the CD coordination with the book.Have received the CDs, it is as wonderful as the companion book. This book/CD set is a great way to place the song with the bird you are looking at.This is a must have book/CD set is great for beginning birders as well as for the seasoned birder.I highly recommend this set for those who want to learn "Birding by Ear".A fantastic addition to anyone's library.

A great book for adults and children
I have purchased 3 of these books throughout the years. I purchased the first one for myself years ago as field guide to identify the birds in our area. I like how the chapters are by the color of the bird and shows both the male and female of the species. Also listed is the birds migration, habitat and nesting and brood. I was so impressed with the ease of this book that I recently purchased two more along with children binoculars to identify the birds at their feeders. The kids sit there and watch the feeder and look through the book to show us the birds that they see.

We keep this book handy in our kitchen where we can see the birds come to their feeders. The kids enjoy seeing the birds outdide and then trying to find it in the book. It also provides information which is very nice.I live in south eastern PA so I may also get one for DE incase we get some visitors from over the boarder.

Book cover almost ever bird that could possible be seem in PA
Comprehensive book with what I think all the birds that could possibly fly or live in Pennsylvania!!!!! I wanted a book to identify the bird that come to my bird garden. I tend to attract a lot of different birds with many building nests on my property. My family and I are always wondering what the name of the birds are so I bought this book since it was specific to bird in PA. The book is color coded by feather color so it is easier to find your bird quickly. I have not used it in the garden yet but have looked up some of the birds that a regulars. The information given on each is very informative and detailed. The book is sized to be a field guide and carried with you on a hike. For me, I would have been happier if it's format would have been larger sized as I do not intend to carry it around, That is why I gave only 4 stars but I would recommend this book to others,

Beautiful pictures and descriptions
Bought this guide for a camping trip I was taking my 4 small kids to. It was perfect. They loved looking at the pictures of the birds leading up to the trip and in the car on the way there. When we got to our campsite wouldn't you know, we found a yellow and black feather on the ground. The book is separated by colors with color coded tabs which made it very easy for my kids to sit down, flip to the yellow section and start identifying the feather. It's also pocket size which made it easy to bring along and easy for their small hands to carry. Great book, highly recommend.

Lots of facts, great pictures
I love this book it has great detailed pictures of both the male and female birds. It’s organized by color of bird then size helping making field identification easier. The glossary has small check boxes that you can check each bird you see to keep a personal record. Loaded with facts this is great for a beginner bird watcher.

Best PA bird book
Lost this book and didn’t realize how much I referenced it until it was gone, so ordered a replacement. It is organized by color, which makes it easier to locate an unknown species. Ordered a copy for my 5-yr-old grandson also as he loves that he can go to the red section to find the cardinal, the blue section to find the blue jay, etc.
