Nicely finished cap for 82mm posts
This lovely oak newel cap is well finished and has a nice weight to it. The recess cut into the bottom is to allow it to sit on an 82mm post rather than the more common 90mm so make sure to check before ordering. These half caps are comparatively expensive compared to a full cap but this one is well manufactured and finished. If it is a half cap you need, then this is good value and good quality.

A Good Piece of Wood but Needs a Little TLC
This is a great piece of wood that will look awesome on my stairs bannister! It may need to be sanded a bit more as 2 of the sides feel quite rough… I’m not sure if this is due to the grain of the wood or just quality control from the suppliers end.The inside square cut is also quite rough and not 100% smooth and polished. It needs a little TLC but its still a nicely shaped piece of wood!

Very poor oak, big grain crack running through it

Pretty, but rough and unsanded
We're converting our attic, and wanted the new newel posts and caps to match the original Victorian oak below. This seemed like the perfect thing. Very similar to the original, and at a sensible price point. The item itself is real raw solid oak, and the machining is consistent. I think the way they kept the cost down was by skipping the finishing stages as almost every fascet of the newel cap is rough and unsanded, which is real shame when you feel unseen faces and find they've been planed smooth. If you're going to buy this, realise that in exchange for saving some money, you're going to have to spend an evening with sand paper getting it perfectly smooth. If you're unaware, raw oak can leech tannins into your skin, which leaves temporary black/blue stains, so you will want to seal it somehow either with oil, wax or a varnish. I plan to use a walnut stain followed by Danish oil to get the new stair parts to match my original Victorian ones.

Unfinished
Very decent cap.Lovely grain. It will look great on our new staircase but it does need a little bit of work before you can use it as it is supplied unfinished. Not just from the perspective of wax, stain, varnish, etc but it actually requires a little bit of sanding here and there too.As far as value for money, at £18, it is about £10 cheaper that your local DIY shop, you’d assume the price difference comes down to being sold unfinished, but it costs about twice as much when compared to anywhere else online. Therefore I can’t recommend this as a good value for money because if you are happy to pay less to finish something yourself, especially in the current climate, there are the same products available elsewhere for half of this amount.

Good quality oak post cap
I do think this is a good quality oak Newel post cap and has been made well. I love the shape of this and the bevel on top is really good and I think a good wax or oil will bring this out into its full glory. This has a good weight and will suit any 9x9 cm solid oak post. I also think the price is very competitive for such a quality item so I do recommend.
