Great supplemental hot water heater
This is an excellent choice for a supplemental hot water heater. The size is excellent for small spaces. The output temperature goes up very high. Outlet temperatures measured as high as 130 degrees with 52 degree inlet water. The regeneration time is very fast. Electric consumption is not extreme but it does run at a very low wattage to maintain the tank temperature. It has a US standard, 125V, NEMA 5-15 plug (the same three prong outlet that is on every small appliance in the US) and it can be run on a 15 amp circuit. I ran a separate, 20 amp dedicated line for this for peace of mind. The rest of this is focused on an RV installation. I’ve never tested it in a traditional residential setting. My goal was to add additional hot water capacity to my RV and end the sadness that comes with hot water running out in the shower. I connected and evaluated this unit’s performance in several different configurations: (a) Before the RV’s hot water heater, (b) After the RV’s hot water heater, (c) Underneath the sink, fed by cold, (d) Underneath the sink, fed by hot. Here are my observations for each configuration:a) Before the rig HW heater: Overall capacity is noticeably enhanced, with showers lasting about double as long (5-6 minutes versus 10). I set the heater to medium so it can preheat water before it enters the rig’s hot water heater, instead of having it on the highest setting, in order to save energy. The regeneration time is impressive, on a setting of about 70% on this unit it regenerates in about 5-6 minutes with inlet water around 55 deg F. This is ultimately the configuration I went with.b) After the rig HW heater: It made the output of the rig heater much, much hotter (scalding hot). Overall capacity was noticeably increased. Not sure of the overall benefit.c) Under the sink, inlet connected to cold: hot water was instantly available at the sink, but as soon as the 2.5 gallons are depleted, it ran cold. This is worse than with just the rig heater.d) Under the sink, inlet connected to existing hot: hot water is instantly available at the sink, but the additional capacity is not available for the shower based on how my rig is plumbed.Ultimately, before the rig hot water heater seemed best. Cold water line => this unit’s inlet => this unit’s outlet => inlet of rig hot water heater => outlet to existing hot water system.Overall very satisfied with this unit and would recommend it to my fellow RVers.
