a sweet farewell (spoilers here!!)
Because of the negative reviews on here I was most pleasantly surprised to find these three chapters wholly satisfying..Richard Snow in his afterword describes it beautifully and I quote:"we are able to visit these friends we have followed so very far in a rare state of almost perfect felicity. Jack has seen his black son ably discharging important duties. Sophie and his daughters are with him; Brigid is with her father, she’s thriving, and Stephen is with a woman who is very dear to him. Jack is flying a rear-admiral’s flag aboard a ship of the line. So we can leave them sailing through fair, sweet days – Stephen with his dissections, Jack with his “sacred blue flag,” Killick muttering darkly over the toasted cheese –So yes I loved this sweet farewell.. and I was not bothered at all about the manuscripts..of course the writing is illegible but who cares.. this is the writing of the master..and I found joy in it

Wish there was more
Read this with overall sadness as my two friends Jack and Stephen were going off to Africa and I would never ever know how they fared.Sounds silly? maybe but O Brian’s Aubrey /Maturin’s adventures have kept me going throughout my retirement. They became my friends. I have read them 3 times over now and always hesitated to buy the last unfinished novel for 2 reasons really. One was I read in reviews it was not worth charging for so little written, two.. it seemed to me I was saying goodbye to them by reading the very last of their adventures.I’m glad I bought it, reading anything by Patrick O’Brian on Aubrey and Maturin is a treat no matter how short. Using a Kindle to read this novel meant I wasn’t able to see any of Patrick’s comments as they didn’t enlarge so I was disappointed. I suggest buying the book.He didn’t write much before he so sadly passed away but I enjoyed reading what he did leave us and had fun wondering what would happen on their way to Africa.Goodbye Jack, Stephen and Patrick.

I found this book interesting, but am sad that Mr. O'Brian was unable to give us a polished ending to this magnificent saga of Aubrey and Maturin. His loss is deeply felt, but I will always treasure the stories in this lovely long series. They withstand re-reading and, remarkably, show me something new and rich each time I take them up again. If you have the other 20 books, you should get this final one. Even though it is incomplete, seeing the author's original manuscript reproduced here is interesting to see. Seeing the handwritten text, scratched. out sentences, doodles in the margins...what a glimpse into O'Brian's mind.
