The Splinter: American Assassin: Lance Spector Thrillers, Book 5

Page turning thriller
Fast read and a page turner. Herzog does not disappoint you in his new thriller. But I didn’t understand one thing though. Lance is a valuable asset. Why use him to guard and protect someone’s wife and child? Instead he should be going after the bad guys (or ladies). Why waste a valuable resource to babysit, when MI5 or MI6 should be able to provide that security for its agent’s family. Such page fillers are irrelevant, and a digression from the main theme. Having said that, the author’s foresight on the Ukrainian situation before it even happened makes this book a great read.

The Splinter, book 5 in the series, is the best so far! Saul Herzog really knows how to capture his audience!

Action Lover
I enjoyed the book because of the nonstop action. I read the last chapters without closing the book. The body count is high.I laughed how you hook us into the next book.

Another strong story
What the author does here is unique in that he does not need the main character to tell a story. The writing is so interesting that several times I did not realize until after several chapters read that Lance was even missing. Looking forward to the next installment!

The Prague chapters
The third embassy to be bombed is the last straw for the Montgomery administration. So many have died, and for what? We the readers know that the wrong monster is behind the action. What will Lance do now?

Good series, interesting characters
I’ve enjoyed this series, I’ve really got invested in the characters. This book has been my least favorite as there is far too much back info about some of the characters. By this time I am well aware of the cruelty of the Dead Hand and GRU but there is an overload of non essential information and I have actually skipped many pages of the book as the author droned on and on about these atrocities these people endured and committed. Too much.

What’s Next
I can’t wait to keep reading! You aren’t sure, but you hope for the best for “our guys”! More than a page turner. It is current and scary that it is so real!

A heady blend of espionage and high voltage action.
As Moscow continues to antagonise America, off the books asset Lance Spector is on hand to mop up the loose ends, one of which happens to be a Russian special forces assassin. As has been the case throughout this gripping series, many of the events depicted are drawn from history. That’s not to say that this reads like a dry recount of old newsreels, nothing could be further from the truth.Other than Lance’s immediate challenges, a bigger game is being played out and the man behind it commands the stage like the very best of Bond villains. Dialogue is sharp and some lines will stop you dead in your tracks. There’s plenty of action, vivid settings and a draw to keep turning those pages.

Brilliant Author
This is a review really about the "Lance Spector" series to date. I am now on my fifth in the series and each one keeps me enthralled to the end. They are so contemporary and frighteningly so given the war in Ukraine. All the characters are well crafted, the stories move along at pace enough to make my normal bedtime read 2 hours instead of a half hour. I have read many David Baldacci, Lee Child, Michael Connelly, John Grisham books and these, although more spy orientated, are right up there with the best. Well researched, believable plots and great reading. Thank you

Disappointing compared to the last 4
I couldn’t put the first 4 books down, they were amazing. A rollercoaster ride of action well written and fast paced. This one felt rushed, there were small side stories which didnt match the pace of the book and i found myself skipping the long drawn out descriptions of some of the characters past that had no relationship to the story and felt they were only there to fill the book up. Still a great book and this series is far above one of the best ive read in many years and ill look forward to the next 2 books to come.

it’s well written but getting repetitive
I like the style of the books, but the same story arc with an constant line of exactly the same type, same position, but different name of the arch enemy. Feels like series is a book or two too long
