Livestock Protection Dogs: Selection, Care and Training

Some of the info is a little outdated, but overall it’s worth reading to gain general knowledge about LGDs. It was easy to read and I got through it in about 2 days. Would highly recommend to new LGD owners!

Couldn’t finish this book as the information was contradictory and left us not confident with how to train our Anatolian pups.

This is a great primer to get you started choosing/managing LGDs. There are not lots of books out there to choose from on this somewhat arcane topic.It is more indepth than the Storey Livestock Guardian Animals sections on LGDs. There is a lot of information on the various breeds.There is quite a bit of advice in the book for those choosing an LGD as a companion dog, bonded to people instead of stock.With much of the book focussed on breeds and puppy selection and testing, this book's audience seems to be those who want to breed purebred LGDs for sale.The book DOGS by the Coppingers offers more in the way of behavior analysis. Every dog is an individual, and many modern working LGDs are hybrids. Day to day problem solving for the shepherd is not really covered here, or in many other books on the topic either. I fill in the gaps and find that kind of field training information online in email groups and message boards. The USDA also has some helpful publications.

This is a pretty good overview of livestock protection dogs. There's a dearth of literature on this subject. The author doesn't explain much in terms of training, but covers the general experience of keeping a working dog with interesting pictures and anecdotes. The author apparently breeds Akbash, so includes more material on that breed.
