The center of the trilogy
The trilogy by E. C. Blake (Masks, Shadows, and Faces) creates a complex world of evil and temptations to misuse power in a society of oppression, magic, and kindness. The descriptions are rich in detail and craft environments of stone, water, spirit, and emotion. The main characters are young (in their teens) but older characters have important roles as well. Human frailties are not overlooked in this trio of voyages into growth, temptation, and forgiveness.

Excellent Sequel
In the first book Blake introduced us to a cast of characters and laid the plans for what was to come, and filled the world out well, crafting a unique magical kingdom being wrung out from within by the evil Autarch. In this second book the characters are flushed out more, but the plot development is the real driver of the story, and a great story at that. Mara is wrestling with her new found power and its addictive grasp on her. She makes her way back to the capital, Tamita, where she learns to control her powers and make better use of them, but after she flees the city she meets another, with perhaps even greater power than she.

Good books! A nice young adult book with an interesting premise. I appreciate that the love triangle is kept to a minimum, it's much more of a coming-of-age story. This book does have one random sexual scene in it, but it's brief and not graphic. I would recommend the series based on what I've read so far, excited to read the last book!

Everyone must done a mask at age 15
The second book is a continuation of Mara's plans to unmask all the people. The king is still siphoning all the life/magic from anyone who is masked. She finds the Unmasked Army again and also discovers the Lady of Fire and Pain, who wants Mara to unmask the King. More exciting plots are revealed and the Prince revels his motive for his continued help. Great writing and storyline.

Thumbs Up!
The first in this series had a very interesting premise, kept me turning pages to see what happens next. And also kept me eagerly awaiting this second novel, which did not disappoint. Delving deeper into the dual nature of Mara's gift, Shadows reveals more and more facets to her character. Now I am anxious to read the third novel!

Haven't had time to sit down and read the book yet
I haven't had time to sit down and read the book yet but, have only heard good things about it from close friends of mine that share my likes in books. I have bought the whole series so that I can "plow" through them when I'm able to sit down and give my undivided attention to the series...
