The book tells a story
His photographs and the story they tell reminds one of how fragile this world is. With this photo book, I have now completed my collection of Nick Brandt's mission on the plight of the wildlife of Africa.

Unsurpassed photography. An intimate encounter.
I am not the most eloquent of people, but Nick Brandt's work tends to make me wax more lyrical than anything else does. My wife bought me his first book a few years ago, and I literally had tears in my eyes looking through the pages. I thought that Nick would be unable to top that book, but I was wrong.A Shadow Falls is a masterpiece of photography, and brings those who look at these images closer to the soul of the animals than any Nat Geo show ever could. Each image feels like an intimate encounter, like it's just you, and the animal, alone in the wild. You can almost sense that they know you are looking at them. They are allowing you to be so close. It's personal.Nick does not use zoom lenses, or telephotos, so all the images bring you right up where he was. The startling detail of the king of the beasts, the lion, or the majestic herds of elephants making their treks in search of water, portrayed in a manner that tells a story. They're not just photos, they're so much more.As a musician (and part time photographer), I always ask people what 5 albums would they want to have on their iPod if they were stranded on a desert island. By the same token, I know what book I would want by my side should I ever find myself in that predicament.A Shadow Falls.

I was literally awestruck by these photographs
I see a lot of wildlife photography and photography books in my profession, but I was literally awestruck when I happened upon this volume in a bookstore. I have since shown the book to others who have quite the same reaction and can hardly believe the photographs are "real." There is one stunning panorama of giraffes on a great landscape that regretfully makes contemporary viewers wonder if they have not been "photoshopped" into such perfect spacing and depth. One marvels at the patience Brandt must have to await the perfect lighting, framing and action of these majestic African animals. This book makes an excellent gift for anyone who loves animals, Africa or the art of photography. "Awesome" has become such an overused word today that it loses its true meaning, but this volume of stunning photography will remind you what that word really means.

" Because it seemed impossible to ever create Any better photography.
I waited and waited and finally got my copy. The profile picture of the lion is worth the book alone. I remember the first time I saw this book...I remember that it was all made with film. I remember thinking " what do you do after you finish this book, as a photographer, pack up and retire forever?" Because it seemed impossible to ever create Any better photography...it is perfect...every image. You can "feel" the animal soul. Pure art. And yet, I was wrong...he did not pack up...he made even better down the road. One of the most profound photography books I own, one that is a major influence in my photography choices. I seriously plan to travel to meet Nick Brandt.

Hauntingly beautiful....
I purchased this beautiful book for my husband for Christmas. We had the great opportunity of doing a 15 day safari in Tanzania this fall....the experience was awesome beyond words. These photos are gorgeous and haunting at the same time. It is not your typical beautiful colored coffee table book, but something I believe a bit more interesting and makes one think about our responsibility to all the creatures on this earth. It is expensive but worth every penny in my opinion

A religious experience.
I am not a religious person but some times when opening a coffee table book by an amazingly creative photographer, I get the closest I will ever get to a religious experience and that is what happened with A Shadow Fall.I own all of Nick Brandt's books an for me the imagery in this book stands out beyond anything in his other books. The Photos are astounding. Images like Lion before storm, look great on the internet but there is something about seeing them in print that can't be replicated. The quality of the images is great and is helped by the quality of the book itself, which is very good. My one complaint is that many of the images cover 2 pages but because the binding is so well done and the book is not too big, you don't lose half the image in the fold.I love this book so much and if anyone can get a copy of this book, I would hugely recommend it. It is sublime.

Beautiful
This was a gift for a friend but when it came i was shocked the packaging made it seem a lot bigger then it was still the book is HUGE bigger then what i am used to! But what a fantastic book it is, i flicked through and wished that i could keep it i just wanted it so badly. its been a while since i have seen such beautiful photography, these prints are so fine and the pages such a heavy weight that i would recommend this to, well all that love animals and nature and photographers. Seriously i cannot rant and rave about this enough it is just fantastic!!!

Wonderful pictures but insufficient description.
This is a beautiful book. The pictures are stunning, pictures you can look at again and again and still see something new. The cover picture alone gives an idea of what to expect. Only one criticism; I would have liked more text, descriptions of how the pictures were taken. These are large format pics with quite a bit of processing so I don't think the author is in too much danger of betraying his secrets. It would just make a fascinating read and something to aspire to.

Wonderful book. Awful packaging.
Superb photgraphy, exquisitely printed on very high quality paper. I bought this along with 'Across the Ravaged Land' and the books are a stunning bargain at the moment. I feel that anyone who cares about African wildlife and has children, owes it to themselves to buy one or more of these books. I intend for my kids to inherit these books.Sadly I can give no stars to Amazon for their packaging. I bought the above books and Salagado's "Workers" together, which was quite a large package. The packaging was woefully inadequate, with the books rattling around in an overly large box, loosely padded with small scrap of paper. The box was not strong enough, had partially opened and only by sheer luck were the books undamaged. I would think twice about buying large format books from Amazon again.

Absolutely Stunning
After my own safari trip, I picked up this book at the Natural History Museum (where it is more than twice the price!) and my eyes filled with tears. the photos are beautiful and capture so many wonderful memories for me. This is a gorgeous coffee table book and all of my friends have admired it. I bought a copy for my travelling companion too and she adores it.
