Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing through 2020 Paperback – October 27, 2016

After years of reading rules of sailing, I think I am finally at the level where I understand them. Who knew such a small handful of rules would be so complex? This text, more than any other, helped me get over the hump. My text was missing page 302, a fairly common problem when I buy Amazon books. Fortunately that page was right out of the current rulebook, so I was able to download the missing rules for free online. Overall this is the most thorough and readable reference I've found for learning the rules. I didn't notice big changes in the basic rules, compared to my previous edition. For those who already know the general rules and want a 2017-2020 update, online there are free pdf study editions of the racing rules of sailing that highlight changes. But for those wanting a better grasp of how the rules shape boat to boat discussions, this one's excellent.

If you are serious about boat racing, you should get this book. It explains all the rules very well. Best in the business.

This is the 3rd version that I've ordered, but it's the product of sloppy quality assurance. A reference page is missing and some of the page numbering is incorrect.

Dave Perry's explanations are extremely helpful in understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing. Great examples and explanations of common situations.

This is the definitive book, particularly in the US, for understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing -- much better than attempting to merely read the rule book. Includes diagrams, questions, and well-written discussion. The author is the leading US authority and one of the world's foremost experts.
