Basic guide to healthy eating
I bought this to help me lose weight and to better maintain my blood sugars (as a diabetic). I found nothing Earth shattering in this book, but I found it a good resource for tried and true methods for eating healthy.I found the emphasis on fruits (always stressing eating fruits and vegetables) to be strange. However, as a result, I have found a number of sources of fruits that actually have lower carb and calorie counts than the snacks I had been eating (like Atkins bars) and more filling.I found a paper version of the book might have been a bit easier to use than the Kindle edition (using my PC and Kindle for my Android phone), especially when trying to reference charts and tables with servings recommendations and sizes. It has not been a revolution, but a refinement of the healthy eating techniques I have been compiling. I really like the fact that they do not use any fad techniques or try and bash any diet techniques. For instance, I have been following the debate regarding whether or not diet soda is healthy. Rather than get into the details of that, they simply recommend avoiding "empty calories". In other words, if it does not provide nutritional content, then you should avoid it. They also warn that often when artificial sweeteners are used, manufacturers add fats or other contents that are not good for you. As a result, stick to nutritional food and avoid the current debates in "diet" circles. In the first two weeks, I have lost about 10 pounds without feeling like I have been deprived. In fact, the book stresses eating at regular intervals, so I feel less ups and downs in my daily intake of food. I feel better, have started exercising and feel this will be a good, long term guide to helping me be healthy.

I just got this today.
This book may or may not help me, but I am willing to give it a try. The book, though used, was in great shape.

Easy for a busy mom!
I'm not overweight, but after having gestational diabetes during my pregnancies, I felt it was time to get back on track with eating healthy now that my baby is a little bigger and I have more time (ha!) to worry about myself. This book is dedicated to weight loss, so I have to kind of alter some of the tips, but for the most part it makes eating healthy really easy. When I was pregnant, I was constantly counting carbs and logging information, but this book makes eating healthy very easy. Once you memorize the portion sizes for each food pyramid section and figure out your caloric intake, you can just break it down easily into meals (1 carb portion here, 1 protein/dairy portion there, etc). No counting calories! It's really easy. And honestly, you really get used to eating only whole grain carbs. They tend to fill you up more! One thing that I do a little differently is include one more portion of dairy/protein into my day than suggested (lean chicken, piece of cheese, etc). I feel the protein/dairy portions are important for muscle and bones...

Great information, great presentation
For a diabetic with no other health concerns, this is truly a fantastic book. While it does focus a lot on exchanges versus absolute carb counts which can be tricky to start with, the information is solid, it's easy to understand, the presentation is great and there's a lot of encouragement which is a key part of any lifestyle change. It's very easy to follow and contains important information that has been made accessible which is also important; too often I think we get mired down in medicalese and there goes our concentration right out of the window! That's also part of the reason why I gave it 5 stars. It gives you a solid idea of how you can eat better to change your life and hopefully extend or at least improve it and reduce the likelihood of complications. For the diabetic who has coexisting conditions, just know that this book deals with diabetes extremely well and you just have to take into account that some info might not be relevant to or practical for you.But other than that, I highly recommend this. I'm diabetic, and I'm also hypothyroid and I have cirrhosis (just for the record).

A GOOD BOOK TO GUIDE YOU
I have several books all giving you advice on how to control your diabetes but this takes a different approach by telling you to lose the weight to control it. It works on your habits...tackling them one at a time...with practical suggestions that will help you break the old bad habits and embrace the new good habits. Has some good suggestions to get exercise in your busy life and eating to lose weight. One suggestion says that you only watch TV (or read a book or other non-moving activity) the same amount or less the amount of time you exercise. So if you exercise for one hour then you earn one hour of TV. It doesn't mean you have to exercise the entire hour at once and it gives you creative ways to work it in. Would recommend it and the journal to go along with it.

A very useful book (if a bit on the pricey side)
I especially liked the bit about 'the greenlight to eat as much as much fruit and veg as you want'. There's useful advice in this book and the Mayo Clinic badge means that its not just from some 'snake oil salespeople'. As with any of the Diabetes literature, it may be true, but its very depressing to read the serving sizes at the end of the book......
