Spiritual Discipleship: Principles of Following Christ for Every Believer (Sanders Spiritual Growth Series)

Refreshing AND Transforming!!!
This book is amazing! I've taken 5 men through it and many more from our church are taking it on! The best part of it is that it isn't merely Sanders' philosophical position loosely backed with Scripture...instead it's rich in Scripture which Sander's uses to reveal how the Church has softened what it means to truly follow Christ. In one chapter, he reveals how in the early Church the word "Christian" equalled "disciple". Yet today, we've diminished the word "Christian" to merely mean "believer" while a "disciple" is now only meant to reference someone "really serious about their faith."I must respectfully disagree with the review presented by W.R Murphy on July 15, 2010 when he writes, "his (Sanders')position on discipleship in relation to salvation makes disciplship optional for the professing Christian." Not only does Sanders NOT detach discipleship from salvation nor make discipleship optional...he makes it very clear that the marks of true discipleship are the only marks of truly belonging to Christ. Mr. Murphy's quote from Bonhoeffer is meant to draw a distinction with Sanders yet they are actually in harmony...in fact Sanders quotes Bonhoeffer himself frequently in many of his books.A must read for anyone...especially if you want to get back to the biblical standards of discipleship laid out by Jesus and the Bible!!!

A Solid Classic on Discipleship
I was introduced to J. Oswald Sanders in the 1990's thru this book (which I ultimately left on a plane some years ago). The Spiritual Growth Series is really good and tracks right with the Scriptures. Sometimes you are better off reading old books than new ones--and Sanders is one of my go-to authors. His books are timeless and exegetical, staying right with the biblical text. In Spiritual Discipleship, Sanders takes us through various texts which explain what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus. This book will challenge and correct even the oldest believers. If you're on the fence, just get it. It's that good.

Challenging and Edifying
I was introduced to J. Oswald Sanders by first reading Spiritual Leadership, and I have to say I have not been disappointed by this work either. The writing style is direct, concise, and Bible based. The sections and chapters are fairly short, and I found it an easy and quick book to read through. Sanders pulls many great insights and principles from the sayings and actions of Jesus as He led His disciples to greater maturity (as well as other passages). I really enjoyed the chapters on conditions for discipleship, love, compassion, maturity, the Holy Spirit, and hope.Definitely a book I recommend for group study or personal growth, along with the other works by this author.

J. Oswald Sanders is Always Worth the Read
While my reading of J. Oswald Sanders is limited to just a couple of his books thus far, I have found that each is full of a wealth of information. His books are exceptional, applicable, and needed in the church today.J. Oswald Sanders lays out both what discipleship looks like and more importantly, what a disciple of Christ looks like. Biblically grounded, the book is a good evaluation tool for any person to use for their own life. I would not only recommend that every person read this book, but then take it and teach it to others, theough one-on-one discipleship, small groups or a large group study.

The devil like to hide truth in pain view and this book helps to undo that.
Brilliant book. A must read for anyone who wants to grow as a follower of Jesus Christ. You don't know what you are missing until you see it laid out.
