The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes Collection

Best Sherlock ever
I think I own every commercially available Sherlock Holmes movie and TV show and I've read the entire cannon start to finish more than twice. This is by far the most authentic Sherlock ever done-- one of the keys is a real Watson. Sherlock would never have tolerated a bumbler, after all.The shows get a bit bizarre toward the end of the series and almost seem to adumbrate Brett's tragic end, but even the worst of these are better than anyone else's best.

British Classic Seriess -- got the DVD to rewatch my favorites
He is one of the great actors for the mystery series. I've seen him in many episodes.I'd rather purchase DVD set than to pay extra bonus channel $$$$ dollars each month. And, eventually, I plan to do away with my internet -- ($80 a month is nuts) -- and to just use my TV and Free Antenna for shows. Our small town is too far to get public television and the British mysteries free on that. No Signal 99% of the time.GREAT TO HAVE A SET AT HOME. LOVE THIS SERIES.

Who is Holmes?
Perhaps Basil Rathbone was the quintessential Holmes for the 1930s and '40s, but, I believe that Jeremy Brett will be noted in the history of video productions as the best of the best Holmes. Quixotic, mercurial in temperment, a slight hint of mental aberation combined with obsessive compulsiveness, and a mysoginistic bent - all are portrayed to perfection. With outstanding technical direction and cinematography, the films are a feast for the eyes. London of the 1890's, the height of the Victorian era, is shown in it's rigid class structure - slendor at the top, squalor at the bottom - and Holmes gleefully burrowing through it all to find the culprit.Refreshingly astute after the portayal as a bumbling, if kindly, semi-idiot by Nigel Bruce, David Burke and, later, Edward Hardwicke, portray Holmes' able companion, Dr. Watson, as thoughtful, concerned, able and an intelligent friend.I have been watching the Granada films for over 20 years and Holmes movies for over 50 (Could it be that long?). Holmes movies have always been good to watch. Brett makes them great to watch. His passing closed a wonderful, and hard to match, chapter in the book of Holmes portrayals.Watch all of the Granada Holmes films and revel in the excitement, pagentry, and sheer enjoyment of excellence.

Six Cases from the Casebook....
"The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes" is the third installment of Grenada Television's one hour episodes featuring Jeremy Brett as the superlative master sleuth and Edward Hardwicke as his faithful and patient collaborator Dr. Watson. This DVD set features six episodes, adapted for television from the originals scattered across Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories."The Disappearence of Lady Frances Carfax" actually comes from the "His Last Bow" collection and centers on the mysterious disappearance of a gentlewoman from a lakeside resort. Dr. Watson carries much of the load in this case for a mostly off-screen Sherlock Holmes. "The Problem of Thor Bridge", "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place", and "The Illustrious Client", all from "The Casebook", are classic and fairly straightforward cases of detection in the best Holmes tradition. "The Boscombe Valley Mystery", from "The Adventures", concerns a murder perhaps motivated by the mysterious past of two men in Australia. "The Creeping Man", also from "The Casebook", may be the most unique story of this series. Holmes investigates the strange case of a mysterious simian creature menacing the inhabitants of a country home. As presented, it is something more of a horror story than a straight-up tale of detection.Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke are old hands at their increasingly nuanced partnership as Holmes and Watson by this series. As the stories bring out, Holmes depends on having an audience in Watson and ocassionally imposes on that long-suffering and loyal gentleman. The disease that would ultimately take Jeremy Brett's life has by this series made him look increasingly haggard and begun to erode his screen time and energy. Fans can rest assured, however, that Brett's characterization of Holmes continues to be absolutely first-rate.This DVD collection is very highly recommended to fans of the Grenada Television series on Sherlock Holmes.

Finally!
Finally, MPI media is releasing the fourth installment of the critically-acclaimed Granada Television "Sherlock Holmes" series on DVD! Suffice it to say these are the finest and most "authentic" productions of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes ever made. Most fans consider the late Jeremy Brett to be the quintessential Holmes, and Edward Hardwicke is a fine actor in his own right and a most excellent Dr. Watson. Sadly, Jeremy Brett was in quite bad health when these final episodes were created and would die several years after. Too bad. He was a gifted actor and should rightly be credited with "bringing to life" one of the 20th Century's most beloved fictional characters. People may quibble about liberties taken here and there with the stories, but for the most part the "Casebook" series, like all the others, is very high quality, well-written, produced, and acted. Again, I'm anticipating techno-files may complain about the "transfer" as they have on past releases, but I believe MPI has done the best they can and the DVD is still FAR superior to owning these on videocassette. Don't purchase these as an introduction to the series, start with the "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." However, if you're here, its probably because you already own the 3 prior DVD packages, "Adventures," "Feature Film Collection," and "Return," all of which are excellent. Are these worth purchasing? Absolutely. High quality, intelligent, and family-friendly entertainment you can enjoy for a lifetime. Pull out every couple of years to watch them over and share with friends and family.

Best series, ever!
The simplest, and best, thing you can say about this whole series is that you can watch every episode again, and again, and again. When you've seen them so many times you can recite the dialog by heart, each new viewing will reveal some precious little detail that you missed all the other times. This was telelvision as it ought to be. Great stories, by a great author, brought to the screen with impeccable taste, sensitivity, and a keen eye for the historical period. As for Jeremy Brett, words do not suffice.I wouldn't trade one episode for every episode of reality TV [surely the ultimate oxymoron of the post-modern age] broadcast in the last ten years.E.Cassidy

Sherlock at its best
I love Jeremy Brett's rendition of Sherlock Holmes. I started watching the series on TV back in 1994 when I was living in London and I was hooked! I was greatly thankful that Amazon carries those amazing episodes in their different collections, It's a joy to watch, you will not regret it.

Great TV, Great Picture, Terrible Sound
This series is very, very good indeed - I have the 4 DVD sets of this series. The picture on this DVD box set is very good - dramatically better than the first two series. The only drawback of this DVD set is the sound. A very poor noise-gate has been added to the audio during the mastering stage of this DVD set, and as a result, the dynamic range is VERY large. (in layman's terms, the quiet parts are VERY quiet requiring you to crank up the volume to a ridiculously high degree, and then the loud parts are VERY loud, blowing you completely away). Make sure your DVD player has some type of sound compression or limiting feature - otherwise you'll have to choose between either not being able to hear the dialogue, or waking up your neighbours two streets away! This is a shame since the other 3 DVD sets in this series don't have this problem.

Sehr gut!
