This had me on edge and I loved it
Freida McFadden never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat with her unpredictable storytelling, and "The Inmate" is no exception.Brooke Sullivan, a nurse practitioner, embarks on a new job at a men's maximum-security prison, concealing a secret that ties her to one inmate, Shane Nelson. Eleven years prior, Brooke's testimony played a pivotal role in convicting Shane of three gruesome murders—a case that shook their hometown. Returning to the scene after her parents' tragic death, Brooke, now a mother to ten-year-old Josh, begins questioning her past and the reliability of her testimony. Shane, proclaiming his innocence, warns Brooke about Tim Reese, her childhood friend, adding layers of doubt and intrigue. As the story unfolds, the dual timeline—alternating between the night of the murders and the present—keeps readers constantly guessing and second-guessing.McFadden's narrative technique, presenting events in tandem, creates an enthralling experience. Each revelation in the present-day chapters challenges preconceived notions, only to be reconsidered with insights from the past. The author skillfully manipulates the reader's perspective, creating a rollercoaster of uncertainties that adds to the novel's allure. The characters are compelling, each contributing to the intricate web of suspicion and mistrust. While Brooke's occasional naivety may frustrate, her unwavering commitment to righting wrongs and protecting her son is admirable. Shane's enigmatic innocence and Tim's ambiguous trustworthiness add layers to the suspense, keeping readers guessing at every turn.Without divulging too much, "The Inmate" is a labyrinth of twists and turns that maintains its grip on the reader until the final pages. McFadden delivers a suspenseful narrative that, true to form, keeps readers guessing right up to the surprising conclusion. If you're in search of a thrilling read that will constantly keep you on your toes, "The Inmate" is a must-read.
