Q: How do you sharpen the lead to a point?

The cover of the eraser has a small hole in it. If you gently place the tip of the lead inside it has a file that will sharpen it. Be careful when you are done the dust of the lead will come out I recommend tapping out on a napkin. Or on a paper, if you want to use it for shading.

Q: is the clutch mechanism brass or plastic?

Looks like brass to me. See the pic in my review.

Q: How do you take out old eraser?

Just pull off the top metal section, that exposes the eraser. Pull the eraser out with the attached metal piece. Pull out old eraser and replace with new. Reverse the sequence and that's it.

Q: Where do I purchase eraser refills?

For the price of this pencil, just buy another set. And buy a separate eraser block or stick.
