A Broadbrush Intro to DIY Activism
Despite some quirky and outdated stuff Making Stuff & Doing Things is a nice recipe book. It offers a broad sample of notes full of DIY spirit, and makes for an interesting read and reference. The book in its graphic design and contribution style stays true to the vibe of collaborative action, knowledge sharing, and even direct action. Irregular, with plenty of nice zine clippings, with entries that range from almost anecdotal to those that explain in detail a technical approach to certain chores, from gardening, to cooking to healthy sexual practices...True, it suffers a bit from its generic range, but it is also part of its entertaining virtue. 5 years after the original publication stuff is not outdated per se but with some curiosity and small dedication most recipes should be available and expanded on-line. But this makes for a nice intro if one is not too distracted by the most amusing sections. For instance, the one to kill sock bacteria with sunlight instead of washing them is something that I hope to leave aside even in my future hobo days. But besides entertaining touches like this one, it is a good reference compilation to have around.

A rough gem
A collection of punk rock DIY topics that range wildly; from making your own toothpaste to how a woman can urinate standing up, from hemorrhoid treatments to pet care, from packing for a punk rock music tour to egg substitutes, from book binding to seasoning a cast iron skillet. It's roughly cut and a little hard to read at times, especially since it was taken from Kyle Brano's photocopy-zine "HOW2", but that's what gives this book its charm. These kids walk the talk. So, if you want to make your own quill pens, envelopes, compost pile or flea collars for your cat, or maybe even learn how to play guitar chords (E, A, D, G, C, which will probably cover most of the Ramones' songbook) this is the book for you.

Useful! Fun! Practically Free!
I was definitely intrigued by the concept. As an author, artist and zine publisher myself, I am always looking for the latest and freshest takes on life in an Arts & Crafts World. This book may be intended for kids getting started in DIY crafts and other projects but it has something to recommend for the more seasoned among us as well - those of us who grew up on books like Be Here Now by Baba Ram Dass, and Living on the Earth by Alicia Bay Laurel. The zine compilation format rocks - no, it isn't a Michael's style Step-by-Step - that's what makes it fun and clever enough to hold almost any (I suspect) dyed in the wool DIYer's attention. Written BY people who like to make stuff, FOR people who like to make stuff. At this price, it will stay on my gift-giving list for the unforeseeable future.

Not really that cool, but nostalgic.
Pretty micky mouse stuff. More of a lame attempt to subvert big corporations. Kind of a cross between a boy scout handbook and a Playboy advice column.

Useful and Funny
This book is a unique find. Not only does it have a ton of fun things to do and how to do them, but it is quite useful. When I originally bought the book I thought that it would be something that would be fun to read through. I have only owned the book for about a month and I have used it multiple times. There are so many great and fun activities to do. It was quite a delight when I read through. Highly Recommend.

Another very useful book
I just got this book the day before Christmas and opened after. I've read through most of it and find it very fun and useful. There's going to be a coming time when our economy tanks and we need info like this to keep alive. We need a whole new philosophy of life, one based around both surviving and living and enjoying life, not "Working jobs we hate to buy things we don't need."
