Jack Welch and the 4 E's of Leadership: How to Put GE's Leadership Formula to Work in Your Organization

Amateur rehash of "Straight From the Gut"
Don’t waste your time with this book. It reads like a high-school book report, complete with extra lines between paragraphs and too many adjectives to fill space. The author is trying (and failing) to synthesize Jack Welch’s narrative memoir “Straight From the Gut” into something like a leadership Cliff’s Notes of the GE 4E leadership model. There are lots of callouts and highlighted blocks (which take up plenty of space) which say useless things like “The 4E leader understands that Energy is important to Energize the troops”. Cosmic! I was hoping for a lot more context, case studies and specific examples of the 4E model in use, but what I got instead was an amateur book review, with almost nothing actionable. Hell, if there were even some ‘war stories’ about leaders struggling to differentiate (read: fire) employees there would have at least been something entertaining if not educational. Wait – I almost forgot – there was a very specific call to action in the last chapter about how to use the book as a leadership tool. The author shamelessly recommends that you buy a separate copy of this crap for each manager in your office so you can all have buyer’s remorse together. Maybe I’m just jealous because this oaf sold a million copies of this stupid book, and I was stupid enough to fall for it. Do yourself a favor and pass this one over. If you really want something useful, read your copy of “Straight From the Gut” again, but this time, use a highlighter. When you’re done, type up your notes and I promise you’ll be very pleased with the results (I’ll happily share my notes if you email). If you still don’t believe me, just use Amazon’s ‘look inside’ feature to read thru the whole book. Don’t worry, it won’t take you very long. Best regards!

I was really annoyed that he could fire over 100
I really wasn't impressed. The ideas were old, just presented with different words. Maybe I need to reread the book. I was really annoyed that he could fire over 100,000 people all in the name of profit. Sure your numbers are going to look great when you decrease an organization by that many people. I understand in these times one must have "edge" and "innovation," but a good leader could find other means. I realize that there was probably a lot of fat that needed trimming, but by his methods? No. He took the easy way out. But just give managers crazy pay increases and bonuses is nuts. What about the product? Who can buy them? This crazy way of thinking is what is ruining this country. I'll stop because I don't have a lot of positive things to say. Starting the book speaking of Welch's ultimate failure was wrong. I had a negative feeling from the beginning until I found that there were forces beyond his control that caused the acquisition to belly up.

The best Welch book yet!
I have read just about every book either written by or about Jack Welch that has been published. This is the best book over-all. Most of what is written is just a rehash of what Welch wrote about himself or the Author keeps repeating the same information with new graphics and slightly different format with each new book he writes. If you want more detail about the history of GE and of Welch, try another book. However, if you want good information about how he implemented his ideas and how you can do the same, this is the book for you.

Quotable!
My husband sends me a quote from this book daily and every one of them is inspiring. This author knows what he is talking about when it comes to the business world and it's a quick and easy read. My husband is not a big reader but really enjoys this book.

This book expands on the 4E's of Jack's leadership. This is a good book if you are a follower of Jack. I have used this principles with some success in my own style and implementing for departments and whole organizations. I recommend it to new leaders or those aspiring to be leaders.
