Inside Spetsnaz: Soviet Special Operations : A Critical Analysis

SOVIET SPEC OPS - The veil lifted
This is one of the few books on Soviet Special Operations Forces (SOF) collectively known as Spetsnaz. This book covers Soviet Army and Navy SOF in excellent detail. This is an older book printed in 1990 being the last book to be printed on the Spetsnaz prior to the end of the Cold War in 1991. What I enjoyed most about this book is that each chapter is written by different authors giving various analyses on the capabilities and operations, without a major western bias. The book has fourteen chapters all very good in my opinion. Some of the chapters that stood out to me was; Chapter 2: Western Misperceptions, Chapter 11: Afghanistan, and Chapter 12: Spetsnaz and the Deep Operation. The chapters cover a broad spectrum of topics from political, strategic and historical, again giving a wide range perspective on these elite units. Overall this book is not in the weeds like "Spetsnaz: The Inside Story of the Soviet Special Forces" by Viktor Suvorov which I really enjoyed because it covered a lot of training aspects and organization, but I found this book to be a little more unbiased and on the level. Overall I recommend both books to the military history student.
