Fascinating and frightening
It's both fascinating and frightening to realize how completely these people's, [Mr. Strieber's and many others'], lives are taken over by such abduction experiences. For those who imagine they might desire such an experience: be careful what you with for. ~Stephen S.

Not what I expected
Overall I thought the book was good, first few chapters were a little scary, however the rest of the book left me wanting more. I did enjoy his writing and some of his theories but I think the truth is much simpler.

Self important and presumptuous
While I don't totally disbelieve the writer that he experienced something, I don't like that he continually asserts that objectivity is of upmost importance only to immediately then be subjective. He seems to constantly try to make a case that these creatures are simply misunderstood in their motives. It's almost like he perceives abduction as a good experience and abductees are blessed with secret knowledge. The entire later section of the book is a difficult read (all the goings on about how aliens and people need to come together in a creative force). It practically made me gag because it was like saying, "yeah, they are raping people and stealing unborn children but they just want a loving relationship with us as equals."

What evolution looks like when it's applied to the conscious mind
It's difficult to say what this book has meant to me over the last 30(?!) years. It is one I return to again and again, and I always get something new from it. The Strieber's commitment to living in the question and keeping it open without jumping to conclusions about where the beings originate and why they are here should be a master class for investigators in the field. There were concepts so foreign to me when I first read this as a teen who was only there for "the alien stuff" that now resonate so deeply. Concepts beyond the question of the visitors; ruminations on spirituality, meditation, marriage that have been a guiding force in my life. I grew up surrounded by awful marriages, reading a man talk so reverently about his wife and their life together actually changed my perception of what was possible in relationships. This book has ruined most other books by experiencers for me, because while others may certainly have interesting stories, they aren't all gifted writers of this caliber. The sincerity, confusion, fear, and ultimately bravery to confront the unknown are palpable. I can't wait to read the new introduction and dive into the mystery all over again.

Republished and waiting to be revisited
Although Mr Strieber sometimes puts too much poetry of meaning to my liking into the phenomenon of non-human Sentient Life Forms (as I’m starting to call them), this is a truly thought provoking book. Because he refuses to put it into a simple box with a direct agenda, it opens up questions. Lots of them. As answers unfold, more questions arise. The ones who “commune” with humans on their terms, are they one Race of Beings? Are there multiple Races? Is it an organic outpouring of humankind’s unconscious? Are we an outpouring of theirs? One thing is for sure: Humankind isn’t quite the top banana we like to think we are… and there is a whole lot more to life and our evolving consciousnesses than we’ve begun to dream of.Side note: I read this book when it was first released. Reading it a second time all these years later, I found it to be less scary than it was the first time. I’ve grown and so my understanding has grown.

Food for Thought
The author did a good job of relating his experiences and his efforts to understand/cope with them. A very good read.

Very interesting book.
It presents theories I have puzzled over for many years. I know there are extra-terrestrials around, likely on and possibly underwater or underground on planet Earth for eons. My parents saw a group of five UFOs low over their heads back in the ‘60s, while crossing a parking lot, and many other concert patrons witnessed them as well. In those days no one spoke of them. I myself watched a high-flying UFO just half a block from my house a few years ago, as it turned a sharp right-angle and suddenly cloaked. I am a firm believer - I have known since childhood that could not possibly be alone - just look up! This book is thus fascinating for me to read, and it will keep my senior brain busy processing it. I wish I had found this book when it first came out, but better late than never.

Very timely revised return
I remember buying the second book first in the 90s breakthrough the next step and was envisioned and sparked my life long research into the whole phenomenon- indeed awesome- from John E mack to crop circles to Stanton T Friedman-and getting this new edition with new introduction from Whitley is full circle awesomeness- the awakening eye finally opens and gazes outwards the dark reflective eye that is us- always remembered that-really is a special time in human history yes indeed
