Pulitzer Prize finalist delivers.
What a fantastic play this is.Amy Herzog is completely new to me. I had just recently heard of her, and I only stumbled upon her work after the Pulitzer Prize announcements, of which this play was a finalist for in the Drama category (obviously). So I decided to chance it with a new playwright and buy the script. I couldn't be more impressed.Basic plot-line: Leo arrives unannounced at his grandmother Vera's house after completing a cross-country bike trip, where he suffered a devastating loss. Over the course of a month, the two bicker, laugh, scream, and ultimately form a loving bond.Herzog does an amazing job of keeping her characters real. That may not sound like much, but when you're talking about good, human drama, true-to-life is essential. Characters are both well-developed and growing throughout the course of the play. There's such an interesting dynamic being played out between Leo and Vera. Herzog tempts her audience (or me at least) to ask, 'What exactly is our obligation to family? Does blood really run thicker than water?' Only a playwright who understands people can incite such questioning. And in case you're not convinced to buy yet, I'll just hint that there is an absolutely fantastic male monologue near the end of the play, better than any crummy audition monologue one might find browsing the Internet or old solo books. So there's that.Fantastic script. I can't wait to see what Herzog has in store.

A ride across the Generation gap.
I originally read the play in American Theatre Magazine and was very impressed at the relationships. It helps that it is a small cast with one set and not a puppet to be found anywhere. Our audience for something like this; if they are willing to sit through something that is not a comedy or musical, wants to see themselves or people they know in the story. I live in communities that are primarily white and have a 4 yr. college and community college within 15 miles of each other. The Theater going public is typically older. My challenge is to get multi-generations not only into this apartment, but in the same venue together.

funny, sardonic
Bought this to consider an offer to perform in its production. Touching, funny, sardonic. Interesting look at an unexpected deepening/renewing relationship between 91 yr old grandmother and young adult grandson, as well as a couple of grandson's paramours. I look forward to performing the grandmother's role, whenever staging and other actors can be arranged! Both grandson and grandmother are unique characters. Thanks to Amy Herzog!

A story of Loss, Resilience, and the eccentricity of communication
Quick read and a brilliant story. A young 20-something loses a best-friend in the middle of an epic and exhausting journey. He turns to his grandmother because he has nowhere else to go. And then the rest of his life catches up with him while he's there. A lot is revealed about his grandmother's life as well, in this charming look into communication between generations.

Great Read
I would give it a four stars because it was good in most categories and could arguably be five stars. I enjoyed the dialogue and its humor between each character.

Eh IDK
I got this book for my ex-girlfriend because she needed it for school. I dont know if its any good. Im solely basing my review off of the picture on the cover. Could definitely be better, but is good enough.

Great!
Book came in perfect condition and it was a very interesting play. The characters were quite human and vulnerable and wrong.
