Fantastic Portable Port
This is an excellent port of Monster Hunter XX, which is an expanded version of Monster Hunter X (Monster Hunter Generations here in the West). Unfortunately, this Switch version is only available in Japanese, and Capcom has no plans to localise it. I was disappointed to hear this - finally, a portable Monster Hunter title in HD! No more muddy graphics like in the 3DS version that sometimes made it very difficult for me to see what I was doing! But wait, only in Japanese. I don't speak any Japanese whatsoever. I can count to ten and say hello, goodbye, and thank you. And that's it. So it was a little intimidating to jump into this without being able to read any of the text. But if you played Monster Hunter Generations on your 3DS like I did, this is just an expanded version of that. And while the text can be delightfully quirky in MH games, it isn't necessary to enjoy running around and wailing on dragons with giant weapons. Between already being well versed in MH game mechanics, online guides that offer english translations of all the shops, missions, and items, and just messing around to memorise menu locations, it was perfectly playable even for this Japanese-illiterate gamer. It may take a bit of extra effort, but this is an excellent game and I'm loving its wonderfully crisp HD graphics that make the monsters and environments so much clearer. The only minor gripe I have is that game can transfer save data between the 3DS version and the Switch, but sadly only if you have a JPN region 3DS and game. I was unable to use this feature on my NA copy of Generations. But it wasn't a deal breaker at all; I didn't mind starting over from scratch. All in all, I do highly recommend this, but probably those who would get the most enjoyment out of it are either die-hard MH fans, or those who can read Japanese.

Great game for a great system.
Warning: DO NOT attempt to play Monster Hunter for the FIRST TIME in a language you do not speak.Assuming you are familiar with the pre-World iterations of the series, this is a great game. It's a ridiculous amount of content, and there are tons of resources online to help you sort out the confusing bits. I love Monster Hunter World, and play it every day, but it's also true that for every one thing World improves, there are two things that got left behind completely. Multiple cats. Having more maps to hunt than you can shake a stick at, as opposed to only five. Dozens and dozens of fantastic, interesting armor and weapon designs, the vast majority of which were dialed back to simple, boring re-skins in World. Many, many monsters. And, of course, the old difficulty level, which you won't find in World until you reach Nergigante. There is a LOT to love about Double Cross, even after experiencing the staggering number of quality of life improvements World has to offer. This game is the pinnacle of classic Monster Hunter, and it represents hundreds and hundreds of hours of play time, which makes it a steal at $60, and, in my opinion, one of the Switch's true must-have games, like Mario Odyssey and Zelda. And I know what some of you are thinking, because I thought it, too, so I'll address localization. There was just another Nintendo Direct the other day, and again, no mention of an English translation of this game at all. Capcom still denies it's happening. Despite the overwhelming success of World, it looks as though they really are not going to bring this wonderful game to the West. So, yeah, it's safe to go ahead and order the Japanese version, if you want monster hunting on your Switch.

It's no MH World - and it is MH XX ...
It's no MH World - and it is MH XX on your Switch - as Capcom somewhat confirmed no World coming to the Switch, this will be the only MH game for Nintendo in a while. Definitely a step up since its 3DS incarnation - the graphics aren't anything to write home about. Gameplay is solid, however, that framerate drops noticeably, and I'm not even a stickler for framerates.

For anyone who has played a previous Monster Hunter game, they will get used to this one in no time! Even though it is in Japanese, it still is a very excellent experience. It is also a very good looking game graphic wise, especially for a handheld! And the controls are great too! I am somewhat new to the series and I have adapted fine to the game's Japanese language but I do recommend watching some importing guide videos or putting a little bit of time into another title of the series to fully understand which item is which and what type of quest is what. Definitely my favorite game in my Switch library! 10/10

Its monster hunter on the switch! I play a lot of monster hunter so I don't have any problems with the language barrier. How ever I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because they could have done a better job. Most of the textures for the environments are higher resolution, but most of the armor sets have low quality textures still. I normally wouldn't care about graphics but this actually bugs me a little.

Wanna learn japanese? Look nowhere else.
On the switch this game is a BLAST to play, it goes without saying how fun it is. But here is my real reason i decided to give a review. I especially recommend this if you actually would like to learn a little japanese. This game actually encouraged me to learn the language. I've only had it for 4 days, and I've seen MASSIVE improvement on a DAILY bases. Now i can almost decipher what the npcs are saying with out Google translate(i do recommend having google translate handy), and it's satisfying when i know what other online players are saying. My in game name is Kaido and while online one of the other player typed in かいどさん? When i realized she was saying my name i went HAM. 😱😂 The game helps with memorizing the hiragana and katakana symbols, ハンタ ~さン means hanta-san for example. It appears a lot so now it'll be hard for me to forget that. And deciphering actually "ADDS" to the fun of the game. Now it's not just meaningless filler dialogue but rather I'm now a "foreigner" learning to mingle with the natives and its extremely satisfying (when my Wi-Fi is working). To me this game turned into an investment in disguise. Do your self a favor and get the game if your interested in the language. Hell, get any japanese game cause I might be doing so from now on.

It's about the gameplay not the dialog
Not for casual gamers but if you've played Monster Hunter before and want a switch game get this. I don't speak Japanese but am familiar with the series for a few... Generations lol and know the menus and weapons and can easily find any info online I need.

You're in for a treat!
Absolutely amazing game! For English speaking players, a word of warning: this is only in Japanese. If you have knowledge of the game from previous releases, then you shouldn't find navigating too hard. There are quite a few posts online translating the menu's into English, plus the website "Kiranico" is a god send! That site has Enlgish & Japanese names for all the items and equipment so it makes it much easier knowing what gear you want to farm. The gameplay is as smooth as ever and it's so nice to be finally playing the game in 720/1080p on the Switch! Playing with the pro controller is the best way to experience this game, because you'll be playing this game for hours, don't wanna cramp up your hands!Playing portable is also great, especially playing with the Joy Cons separate from the Switch.I still need to try the online on the game, so that will need to be commented on at a later date. If it's anything like MH4 & GEN, then it should be a blast! If you are willing to battle the language barrier, then you are in for one of the best monster hunting experiences ever!
