At 95 year old Brother David is a Catholic Benedictine Monk. He tells you his whole life story beginning with childhood, World War II, his entry and life in the Benedictine order. He tells about his years living as a hermit monk with the monastic community at the Big Sur, California and other places he lived has as a hermit. He also discusses his dialogue with and visits to Buddist monasteries. Brother David relates his spiritual insights to those of us in the world. He makes the point about being a hermit monk is not an escape from the world, but is more being one with the world.One of his key ideas is being grateful, expressing gratitude for even the little things in life and being present in the moment. This is a must-read for any Christian or Buddist who is on his or her spiritual journey. The book also has value to those people who follow a Christian or Buddist spiritual path. The book provides so many insights into spiritual life for the layperson or for someone in a religious community.

A truly awesome book by a renowned spiritual master!I will probably never be able to meet this friend face-to-face, but in reading his thoughts I can feel his aliveness permeate my being. I am on my second reading of this book just to stay in touch with a friend.Brother David is a gift to the world. He has touched the true spiritual leaders of the 20th and 21st century from Thomas Merton to the Dali Lama.He is rooted in solid theology and has learned how to actualize gratitude. Every moment for him is a gift that he illustrates for those lucky enough to encounter his writings. This book was written in his tenth decade after he went back to the monastery to prepare to die. God wouldn't let him go just yet without conferring the blessings of his wisdom on us.The book is a keeper.
