Better than the first.
I have the first mistfall so I am pretty much comparing that one with Heart of the mists. It's a standalone actually so you do not need the original Mistfall. Pretty much this is a little different than the first but it is way more streamlined. The instructions and typos from the first are fixed in this one. They added ally cards (awesome addition!) and took away time cards (also awesome!). There are six playable characters that are very diverse like Melekai the dark priest(can bend the minds of his enemies).More rewards and stronger enemies to balance out all the new additions. Overall this is way better than the first because they focused on the issues from the first and fixed them without altering the positive aspects which is perfect. If your new I would jump right into Heart of the Mists skip the first or get it later because you can add things in Mistfall to Heart of the Mists to beef up the game. My opinion it is the best adventure card game for solo or co/op out right now (played most except heroes of Terrinoth). It seems complex and it actually is but the instructions were way better and come with player aid/rules summary so that really helps if your playing with a group.

Strategic yet fiddly and easy to miss some rules
This game offers a wide variety of monsters and areas to travel and fight in. Each area you draw has its own conditions and each monster type has its own fighting rules to obey. It can be a bit much to remember (for some) but to me these rules/description just added to the theme. Like you cant attack a flying creature on your turn unless you have a range weapon...until he attacks, then you can use non-range melee weapons. And the area you are fighting in is windy, so range weapons takes a penalty to 1 range. Lots to remember but that makes sense to me and brings the creatures to life.Biggest downfall is the hero abilities are just as complicated and GREATLY vary from hero to hero. While hero variety is usually a good thing, you have to play like 5 times with a hero to understand how to use them. Each one of the heroes skill cards probably has around 6-8 sentences, per card, on how to use the card. As a solo player this is too much to remember. In addition each game can take up to 2 hours and the footprint is quite large for a 2 hero game.I think NSKN has a winner here, but they just need to streamline the rules and release a 2nd edition.

great game with minor flaws
first off, I absolutely love the Mistfall games as a whole, but I.already wrote a review.for the first game. This game adds more of the same but in a very good way, you get 6 more heroes, 5 new main bosses each very unique from each other, a lot of new rewards but this time the rewards are awesome, there's weapons, armour, robes, rings, trinkets, books, and all sorts of awesome stuff, a whole stack of new locations, and a new concept called Allys, they stay with your hero, and they can attack, block, and each has a unique once a turn ability. You don't need the original base game to play this one, This is a second base set. So.I.was very happy that I could mix this set, with the original set, but after mixing together I found out that the cards in this set are a little bigger then the original game, so you know which set the enemy is coming from, you know which set the encounter is from and so on, I was a little disappointed with this as it took away from the surprise aspect of not knowing when having encounters, and also when you mix everything together you'll notice the enemy cards when in a stack the backs are facing the same way but when you turn the cards over this sets cards are upside down compared to the original game, this bothered me enough to seperate the sets and play them as 2 different games. But the heroes in this game are amazing, you have your standard archer, Tank, mages, and healers, but some are easier to play then others, the tank really feels like a weapon warrior beast, and the archer has some really unique abilities, now the heroes I do play with both sets at the same time, they play very well with each other. All in all this is a very amazing game, if I had to choose which set.to buy I would definitely pick Heart of the mists, everything just works with this set
