A brilliant fantasy novella
The Emperor’s Soul is just as fantastic on third reading. I am still awestruck by the brilliance of this book.Review after my second reading:I first read the novella The Emperor’s Soul as part of Arcanum Unbounded several years back. I recently finished reading Mistborn’s The Lost Metal and decided I needed to reread this STAT.Shai is a Forger sentenced to death for her crimes and magic. To save herself, she is given 100 days to do the impossible—forge a new soul for the Emperor who has been left brain dead after an assassination attempt. No wonder Brandon Sanderson won the Hugo for Best Novella for this. What a brilliant book that packs a huge story in so few pages. The events of the book is set almost entirely in just a single room with so few characters, and Brandon somehow wrote in a huge expansive world with a complex magic system while at the same time delivering an emotionally satisfying story that evoked tears without resorting to tragedy.

Another great story
I have been reading all the cosmere books and this one is fantastic. It also has a different feel from the rest that is a bit refreshing after going through the series.

Reminded me why I enjoy novellas.
I haven't read a ton of novellas, but I have always enjoyed them. From elementary school on, I've consistently read a couple a year (more when I was younger, less as I got older and more into novels).I hadn't read a novella in a few years until this one was suggested to me. I'd read Elantris and Mistborn from Sanderson before picking this one up, so I already knew that I liked his style. This one, however, blew me away. Nothing like Mistborn or Elantris, more similar to Warbreaker but still not all that comparable. The pacing of The Emperor's Soul doesn't fail. It doesn't go too fast or feel like it drags on at any point, while the stakes and the outcome are both incredible.

Absolutely phenomenal little book
I am and have been a Brandon Sanderson fan for quite some time. This will always be one of my favorite books of his. Short and to the point it’s easily a one or two day read but is as good as a full novel. When people want to get into reading fantasy I point them to this book as it’s much less daunting than reading something like the Stormlight Archives. Book quality is nice too. I just wish there was a hardcover option.

Incredible!
This book was amazing! I just started reading Sanderson (just finished mistborn) and wanted to try something else of his, and this did not disappoint. Though short, it painted a vivid world and story, with dynamics illustrating Sanderson’s understanding of human nature and providing some profound points. Couldn’t put it down, definitely will read again, 10/10 recommend !
