Digital Peak Flow Meter for Asthma and COPD Lung Performance Measure Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and Forced Expiratory Volume in 1-Second (FEV1)

I tested this device on a pulmonary waveform simulator. It is one of the least inaccurate 'spirometer' devices that I have ever tested. Standards require 3% accuracy, this device cannot manage 15%. On top of that, the flow impedance that I measured is far above the required level, to the extent that the lung resistance would seriously affect the values measured.

Have used it for two days now. Works well inside. I have trouble getting readings when used outside in sunny weather. When holding hand over mouth peace (shielding the sunlight) a reading is more likely to be successful. Suspect the increased (sometime intense) sun-light may be interfering with the photo-cell detector in the unit designed to count the number of revolutions of the turbine unit. When succeeding to get a reading outside (using hand the shield mouth peace) the FEV1 reading often comes-out lower (about half of inside FEV1 value) if too much outside light is present. Recommend shielding mouthpiece and also perform test in the shade where possible.

I wanted a peak flow meter to try to monitor my asthma and use medication when needed and not when I just felt like I needed it. Sometimes I can’t tell if it’s allergies or asthma (yeah I know they can be related). I read the other reviews and I will agree some with the 1 star review in that I don’t think it’s super accurate. At the allergist’s office the peak flow meter (which is not electronic) measures around 450 for me on good days. This one measures around 550 on good days and when I feel asthmatic it measures around 400-450 and 350 at doctors office. I just keep in mind that it’s off 100 compared to the doctors office. Not a big deal! The device itself is very easy to use. You attach mouth piece to the turbine or fan piece which attaches easily to the hand held part. Simple and easy! Press start button on side and wait for two beeps and icon that looks like someone blowing air out. Blow and get reading. You can repeat blowing into it a few times which it recommends. It saves the highest reading. I think it said it saves up to 120 some readings. Ok, I just looked and description says 240 readings. Hmm I swear book said less but I could be wrong! I don’t have it right now to look. Either way, it saves a lot of readings then begins deleting the oldest one once it reaches it’s maximum. You can also delete or clear them all. I have to read book again as I can’t remember how now. I actually keep this in the case with my Aura Portaneb so I can check my PEF before using the nebulizer. No the peak flow meter does not come with a case. It’s also battery operated and they are easily installed. So I’m giving it 5 stars even knowing it may be off in it’s measurements. I know what doctor’s office measurements are so it’s easy for me so to just subtract the difference from this ones measurements. I recommend you go to doctor and use their Peak Flow Meter then go home and use this one. Compare the readings. If there is a difference then you can just add or subtract the difference also. Simple! After all the doctors office meter may not be that accurate either. Get to know your readings and how you feel which will help you know when you need to use your medications and stop an attack before it gets bad. Its a great tool but that’s all it is a tool! Listen to your body because it knows more than any tool will.

Very easy instructions and so simple to put together. The flow meter arrived quickly and in great shape!! And it comes with batteries!

this has been great - much better at predicting my asthma flares than using pulse oximeter. When i get below 50% of my usual i step up my meds.

I find the directions for use a little vague.

Disliked it from the time I took it out of the box and the instruction manual display did not match my screen display at all. There does not seem to be a way to contact customer service ... frustrating. I am putting this back in the box and sending it back for a refund.

neat product. i hate spiometry tests in the office. i can benchmark my cardiovacular adaptations to training.
