If new to these Authors you are in for a marvelous treat. You will discover the Laiden Universe and the Melant'i of Clan Korval - though all these books are wonderful reads, I strongly recommend starting at the beginning with Crystal Variation. This is two books in one; Agent of Change (book 9) and Carpe Diem (book 10).Agent of Change:As with most all their books this is a love story, however this time it is with guns blazing, mystery, drama and intrigue. I love the opening line "The Man who was not Terrence O'Grady ...". It says a lot about the Author's intent for this story. But it is also about two very different, from literally different worlds, people colliding and after deciding not to kill each other that they may have common enemies. As usual the characters and their dialogue are very interesting and real to life - enjoy.Carpe Diem:This is a continuation of the previous book, but this time the Authors having decided that the main characters, Val Con yos'Pelium and Miri Robertson have not been through enough torment, decide to take the gloves off - horrible creatures these Authors. This is a very interesting story of surviving with your wit's and what little resources are available - enjoy.

Book 1 and 2? or 4 and 5? of a 16? book series. I am totally confused about the order in which to read the Liaden Universe. There is a order presented by the authors on their website but the authors note "The Liaden Universe® is not tidy. Nor is it a series, exactly. It's a Universe. There is therefore no orderly progression, Book One through Book Whatever. That would be easy and, as previously advertised, we never, ever do anything nice and easy."Also, these books are being republished in multiple books per volume by Baen. Sweet, a two-fer, a two-fer and a three-fer at least. Kinda reminds me of the old Ace two-fer days except both of these books are GOOD!That said, I've got me a new Space Opera series to read! I am moving on to _The Dragon Variation_which is a three-fer and earlier in time than the Agent books.I really, really wanted to mark this book as 5 stars but am at 4.4 stars.

If you are a fan of Miller and Lee's work, this is not a new book - it is a repackaging of Agent of Change and Carpe Diem. If, like me your copies of Agent of Change and Carpe Diem are missing their covers, front pieces and are held together with duct tape, then you might want to pick this up.If you are new to the series, then here are two of the foundation books. Agent of Change tells of the meeting between Val Con and Miri. It is not exactly love at first sight. In fact, as the line goes, "either I am going to kill her or I am beginning to like her." This is classic pulp. A little romance, a little space opera, lots of chases, cheesy dialogue, and a predictable plot line. That being said, the dialogue is crisp, the action interesting, and the plot wide open. This is comfort reading at its best. I have read these stories dozens of times and never get bored. This is not Dune, or Foundation, but it is no less enjoyable.

I first read Agent of Change in paperback back when it first came out. For years I looked for more work by Sharon Lee and Stephen Miller. Now, I own, and have read everything they've had available several times.This volume contains two stories, the first better than the second, but both great. Val Con and Miri fascinated me for years and I seriously have read Agent of Change at least fifteen times. The stories are quick, inventive, and totally exciting and the character development strong. I especially liked Edger and was happy to read more about him and his actions in the second book. Although Val Con and Miri seem to be extremely lucky at getting out of jams, there is nothing of the sudden, unexpected rescue in any of the stories. Their actions and decisions always logically lead to their escape.If you read this, the first of the series in my opinion, you will be sucked into the Liaden Universe forever, always wanting more.

This is an omnibus edition containing two of the novels in the growing (yay!) and most wonderful Liaden series: Agent of Change and Carpe Diem. If you have never read these novels and you love science fiction and beautiful writing, you really should read them, as well as the entire series to date. If you have the old Ace editions, they are probably worn out, falling apart and barely re-readable anymore. So here is your chance to replace them.Miller and Lee, or Lee and Miller, write with such style, grace and humor that you almost forget how much action is packed into the stories and how interesting a universe they've created. Other reviewers have provided great detail on what the books are about, so I won't rehash that. Read all the reviews.With Korval's Game, due out in May 2011 and containing Plan B and I Dare, and Crystal Variation coming out in September 2011, containing the "origins" novels, all the previously published Liaden books will be available again-finally! Thank you Baen.I envy the first time reader.

Been a fan for many years.Only criticism is formatting on these omnibus editions leaves a lot to be desired.

Exciting adventures for escapists into the liaden universe…do not start here…read the texts in order…

good stories, well written, well paced...of course you know the good guys will triumph...but it is fun to read about their vicissitudes along the way to their happy end...lots of evil villains, lots of stalwart, kind and sensitive heroes and heroines...lots of flying, explosions, jump maneuvers and space battles...fun...

Interesting and exciting especially how they adapted to a low tech world. I really like this series and have enjoyed them all

AGENT OF CHANGEDie Terranerin und ehemalige Soldatin Miri Robertson steckt in gewaltigen Schwierigkeiten. Unabsichtlich hat sie die negative Aufmerksamkeit der Juntavas - einer mafiaähnlichen Organisation - auf sich gezogen, die sie auf dem Planeten Lufkit in die Enge treiben. Miri scheint verloren, da springt ihr plötzlich ein höchst unwahrscheinlicher Verbündeter bei: Val Con yos'Phelium, zukünftiger Anführer des Clan Korval und perfekt ausgebildeter Spion Liads. Aus dem anfänglichen gegenseitigen Respekt wird schnell so etwas wie Freundschaft und bald stellen beide fest, dass ihre Gefühle füreinander stärker sind, als zunächst angenommen. Für die schönen Dinge des Lebens bleiben Val Con und Miri aber keine Zeit, denn die Juntavas lassen sich nicht so leicht abschütteln.AGENT OF CHANGE hat mir gut gefallen. Der Roman schreitet tempo- und actionreich voran und unsere Helden stolpern von einer unmöglichen Situation in die nächste, aber auch ruhigere, charakterorientierte Momente sind in die Handlung eingebaut. Miri und Val Con sind zwei sehr sympathische Hauptfiguren. Miri ist eine durchsetzungsstarke und kompetente Frau, die eine bewegte Vergangenheit hat. Sie ist trotz allem humorvoll und liebenswert und kann mit ihrem neuen Verbündeten durchaus mithalten. Val Con kann sich selbst nicht genau erklären, warum er Miri geholfen hat, er weiß nur, dass er unbedingt an ihrer Seite bleiben will. Schnell wird außerdem klar, dass Val Con ein Geheimnis mit sich herumträgt, das ihnen noch zum Verhängnis werden könnte. Neben den tollen Hauptcharakteren gibt es außerdem noch einige interessante und sympathische Nebenfiguren, wie etwa mannsgroße, intelligente Schildkröten, die unseren Helden hilfreich zur Seite stehen. Mein einziger Kritikpunkt an AGENT OF CHANGE ist, dass sich die Bedrohung durch die Juntavas für meinen Geschmack etwas schwammig und wenig akut angefühlt hat, ansonsten gibt es nichts auszusetzen. 4 Sterne.CARPE DIEMVal Con und Miri haben ihre Verfolger fürs Erste abgeschüttelt, sind aber auf einem technologisch unterentwickelten Planeten gestrandet. Sie versuchen sich an die dortigen Lebensgewohnheiten anzupassen und nutzen die Zeit für sich, um alte Wunden verheilen zu lassen und an ihrer Beziehung zu arbeiten, nichts ahnend dass Val Cons gefährliche Vergangenheit im Begriff ist, ihn einzuholen. Derweil ist Clan Korval in eine Auseinandersetzung mit Val Cons Auftraggeber, dem Department of the Interior, verstrickt. Val Con soll endlich sein Erbe antreten und seine Familie will Antworten. Shan und Priscilla machen sich schließlich auf die Suche nach dem Abgängigen und stoßen auf einige sehr beunruhigende Wahrheiten.In CARPE DIEM steht neben dem Handlungsstrang um Val Con und Miri auch seine Familie auf Liad im Zentrum des Geschehens. Es gibt ein freudiges Wiedersehen mit Shan, Priscilla und Shans Schwestern. Val Cons Vergangenheit und seine Ausbildung zum Agenten wird ebenfalls näher beleuchtet. Einige der Fragen werden beantwortet, zahlreichen Subplots bleiben aber für die Fortsetzungen offen. Der Actionanteil in CARPE DIEM ist geringer als in AGENT OF CHANGE, was der Spannung aber keinen Abbruch tut. Miri und Val Cons Abenteuer haben mir gut gefallen und die Entwicklungen in ihrer Beziehung konnten mich ebenfalls fesseln. Gelungen finde ich auch, wie die einzelnen Handlungsstränge am Ende des Romans zusammengeführt werden und ich bin schon sehr auf die Fortsetzung von Val Cons und Miris Abenteuern in KORVAL'S GAME gespannt. 5 Sterne.

dies ist die Geschichte von Val Con und Miri.Viele Protagonisten dieser Space Opera werden vorgestellt und nehmen an der Entwicklung der Hauptpersonen teil.Die beiden helfen sich gegenseitig, die dunklen Kapitel ihrer Vergangenheit aufzuarbeiten und zu lösen.Die Handlung der beiden Romane -Agent of Change und Carle Diem- ist spannend und unterhaltsam, ohne unnötigen Horror und ohne unnötige ausufernde Sexszenen.Es gibt zu der Kindle- Version ein sehr gutes Vorwort, das ich zu lesen empfehle.Das schöne an den Büchern dieser Autoren ist, man liest ein erstes Mal wegen der spannenden Handlung, dann ein zweites Mal weil es gar zu schön war und beim dritten Mal entdeckst Du immer noch etwas Neues.Jetzt gibt es auch eine Übersetzung ins Deutsche, etwas dilettantisch, z.B. Loop wird einfach mit Schleife übersetzt und Agent of Change mit Agent des Wechsels, irgendwie nicht beglückend.
