To many issues and sound isn't great.
I have been looking for a new dap for a while and decided to try the ibasso dx170 as it gets really favourable online reviews. My experience does seem to differ somewhat though.Pros: the display is lovely and clear, can be dark in sunlight but can still be used.Volume is good, even at high volumes the soundfloor is clean and the overall sound is controlled.Feels nice in the hand when not in the silicone case (is a little slippy though so one must be careful.Cons:Where to startSound. The ibasso dx170 literally sounds exactly like the fiio btr7 but with very slightly cleaner treble (5%) the fiio has more sub bass presents (about 15%) I prefer the more linear bass on the ibasso. The fiio does have slightly more texture and imaging in the mids. Personally it's chalk and cheese here, but for £200 less and without my continued list of cons, the fiio seems a better buy. (Note: comparisons were done with the fiio hard wired to my phone playing tidal hifi and MQA using 4.4mm balanced. Over Bluetooth the ibasso is vastly superior in terms of sound quality as the fiio sounds somewhat congested and lacks in all aspects, even when using LDAC with sq changed in developer mode to highest quality)The buttons on the side are my next issue. They are so sensitive, especially when in the provided case that I change tracks everytime I pick the player up, or when it's in my pocket and I move. This is entirely unacceptable as the whole idea of a dap is usability. This brings me onto my next issue, which is the volume knob. It's fine as a button but when changing volume it can be very sluggish and take a second to make an adjustment. However, whilst waiting for it to change, or assuming it has already change I turn the knob again. This increase is added to the previous increase and when the volume finally changes it can be considerable. 10, 20, 25 steps. I have found myself ripping my phones from my ears as the volume has jumped so much.I assume this could be addressed in a firmware update, but the buttons seem unlikely as it's the sheer ease in which they are pressed. My next issue, and my main reason for returning is the battery.I don't use the player any higher than 44 on low gain and mainly use around 36. Max 36 on high gain. However the battery drops from 100% to 60% in an hour and a half. I have never actually ran the battery out as I charge it ready for my next use. The player also needs completely turning off after every use as standby uses the battery completely in a day and a half. Once again, this is probably something ibasso could address with a firmware update.Basically. It seems to me, with the really rather good dongles and Bluetooth players out there, that a dedicated "budget" dap seems somewhat redundant. They are delicate, have poor battery life, are big and after owning the ibasso dx170, unnecessary. There is still a market for high end daps which offer a considerable upgrade to dongles and Bluetooth players, but for the budget conscious, the dap is nothing more than a slight convenience over a Bluetooth player hardwiring to a phone.

Good with some glitches
This is a very nice DAP, excellent screen and sound quality (I mainly use it with my DT 770 pro wired headphones). There are some glitches, though, you would not expect on a nearly 400 pounds device, namely:- I don't know if it's only me, but the plastic case shipped with it does not fit the device very well. Switching between songs, particularly when walking around, is problematic: hitting the next song button causes the song to pause or vice versa. This seems to be caused by the plastic cover interfering with button press- The UI is sluggish, particularly in the first few seconds after switching it on, or when multiple apps are running.- The volume wheel is not particularly reponsive and needs to be operated quite a bit to hit the ideal volume- There are some weird aspects related to the Android version, probably fixable but still annoying, such as a constant banner signalling detection of the micro SD card, no night light mode, no ability to set the brightness of the screen, awkward to unlock the screen and so on.All in all, I am satisfied but I do feel that a 400 pounds device should offer more.

Extremely disappointing
This made me realise that you should never, ever, trust reviews from specialised sites (or forums) in high definition audio. Does the device sound good? It does, and it has a balanced headphone output, and the gain option gives it a punch. That's it.The OS is a very outdated android OS where you cannot control anything, you cannot see the usage of battery per application to see where the leakage is and it overheats by doing nothing, by default. Its hardware makes it clear that the battery is going to last healthy as much as one year if you are lucky (mine is already leaking after a few months), and their reviewers, their fans, do not care because they are the kind of people who buy a DAP every year or 6 months. And this device is already out of official warranty. The bluetooth has a horrible reach as well. The only feature it achieves is: the headphone output is good. But a DAP must be much more than this, mostly an android dap where I expected, at the least, some flexibility and control. Probably the purchase I regret the most of the last 10 years.

Soddisfatto 😀
Consigliato!

*U.S. Market customers Readme, Great DAP, but not without some shortcomings.
Instructions for U.S. market customers:Use the pre-installed Chinese language app store to search for the Google Play Store app, then download it and install. The system will ask if you trust the file given its source, and you say 'Yes'. Once you've got the Play store installed, you can delete all of the Chinese apps if you'd like.My thoughts on the device-The good:-tested with Youtube Music and Tidal, sounds most excellent-The overall build quality of this DAP feels good. It has a somewhat reassuring weight, but I have to say it's lighter than expected.-It's a simple, handsome build with three dedicated buttons for Play/Pause and Track Selection +/-. The volume roller also acts as the power / sleep / wake button which.-Bone-stock android makes for a super simple, easy to understand user interfaceThe not-so-good:-The volume roller controls the output level digitally, rather than by an actual analog pot., which works great in theory however the implementation here leaves a ton to be desired. 1) It doesn't work very well if the screen isn't ON. and 2) when it does work, there seems to be little rhyme or reason as to how much rolling the dial will actually affect the volume. Sometimes it will increase / decrease the volume dramatically, but mostly it seems to be make micro-adjustments.-The dedicated play / track buttons also don't work well or consistently. The button quality feels 'meh' at best, with very very little push travel, and zero feedback (no 'click'). This wouldn't be the end of the world, however I find just as often as not that I *didn't* actually press the button, and so this quickly became a frustration. Conclusion:Sure, it sounds great, and it looks great, but to own this you'll have to be willing to live with some major hardware flaws, and at this price point: that seems like an unreasonable ask.
