Anticipatory guidance for pregnant women - with great solutions/options!
The traditional days of rest after delivery is replaced, in most western countries, but the expectation by family members, society and the mother herself that she should seamlessly adapt to the presence of a newborn in addition to her other responsibilities at a time when her physical and mental stamina is not prepared to address the challenge. Other cultures offer a 40-day respite, but not ours! In other places mothers live near their mothers, mothers-in-law, sisters and other family members who can seamlessly pick up the chores (shopping, cooking, laundry, etc.) Not in many western countries, especially in the US! The value of this book is not only in the useful tools and information provided, but also in describing to the mother what she is going through and that she is not the only person who feels she is a never-ending cycle of exhaustion and anguish. (Yes, there are mothers who do not feel that way - but they are not the ones reading this book - or calling me as a La Leche League Leader!) We need to develop a respite care system - informal or formal - to help reduce the ever-increasing risk of Postpartum Anxiety Disorder and Postpartum Depression. This book provides an options...and some will even create a business out of it - more power to them!
