Marks steel fairly well.
Seems like 150 years ago or so when I was much younger and welding and building leaf springs the soapstone I used marked much better. This soapstone leave a okay mark but is hard to see when welding. I will find a better maker for my project.

If you havent. Just buy it already!!
It is a 16 peices set. The 2 holders. 2 soaps one in each holder. 12 pack of stones. The packaging ah man. I wasn't expecting it to be in foam. Nothing was broken. Shout out to manufacturers for going the extra on the foams. Super super fast delivery. If you are a fitter or here and there stone user id say just buy this set. Cheap price good quality. Worth just having it when you need it.

Soapstone Pencils are Great
I use them to clean off the shaft of a moving vacuum cleaner motor where the belt burns rubber if something gets caught up in the roller brush. I don't have to worry about my finger actually touching the shaft using the pencil. I also have used them to mark where I want to hang pictures.
