i was glad to be wrong about Eve.
i bought this on reading about #ironheartEve. have to say, it was based in pure curiosity about the author herself, and the identity politics surrounding the nomination of her semblance to the character Riri.i flipped thru and purely by fate or happenstance, i landed on 'On Prince', and glanced over the lines. Prince > Mj imo (sorry, not sorry. always felt this way since the mid eighties listening to my sister's copy of Purple Rain thru my tape player alarm clock during the late evenings)she spoke of Jack Napier Joker signing the paintings in the Michael Keaton Batman, and her internal association/relationship to Prince as an artist quite eloquently. she's an emotive illustrator with words. i felt every word jump off the page. then I dove right into 'Origin Story', about her parents' early yrs and how they met, and her concepts of love & comic books. i tend to board and bag my books, but some days, i really do know the feel of a great issue rolled up, in my back pocket. a book worth reading on a bench in the sun, just like this one.

Fantastic true writing by a genius writer.
I'll say just a thing or two about this book, which I read through in one day's worth of musing and meditating on the human condition. I don't know how to say how good this book is. Stories and poems by a wise young black woman with a fantastic ear for human life. Chicago, a city where I did some of my growing up, appears frequently here. Fullerton Avenue, even! (I lived just south of Diverse.) Women appear here, and girls. Feels autobiographical. Feels real. Thank you, Ms. Eve L. Ewing, brilliant writer. Many thanks.

Short, Sweet, and Moving
Ewing writes a strong book that touches all of your senses, and pulls on your heart strings. This beautifully crafted book details life inside and outside of the body - and all that, both, are subjected to. A good read to exercise more than just the brain.

A compelling look
This work makes me think, and that is just about the best compliment I can pay anything. The images and stories and lives held within it, are brought to vibrant life in poetry and prose. I'm glad I read it, I know from time to time I will return to it, and I recommend it to anyone, anywhere.

Smart and Beautiful
While her later composition, 1919, is a stronger piece of writing, this collection of poetry is still moving and exciting.

Brilliant poet . . . Future MacArthur Foundation Fellow!
Fantastic book . . . poems . . . mini essays . . . meditations. Eve Ewing is brilliant! Won't be surprised to see her named a MacArthur Fellow. The poem "What I mean when I say I'm sharpening my oyster knife" alone would be worth the price.
